Ed the Plot Bunny and I welcome you to our crazy world.
About Me
What name do you write under?
Formerly ImaSupernaturalCSI, now ChibiDawn23 (I'm also ChibiDawn23 over at AO3)
Why did you choose that name?
ImaSupernaturalCSI came from my first two fandoms I loved, Supernatural and CSI:NY. Then, I became ChibiDawn23 because I quit watching Supernatural and CSI:NY because soap opera-y reasons. ChibiDawn23 was just something I made up!
When and why did you start writing?
When…I was probably ten or eleven. This was the era of saving things on my 3 floppies. I’d been writing forever, I even turned my spelling sentences into stories, but I started writing “fanfic” I guess when I started rewriting endings of TV shows. That escalated into a random series of stories in which pop groups lived out their music videos-like, for example, in the "Una Noche" video for 98 Degrees, they're on an island and it's like Dia de los Muertos, and I wrote a story about Nick, Drew, Jeff and Justin that followed the plot. I wish I hadn't formatted the floppy disks those were on :( I'd love to look back and see just how awful they were.
What fandoms do you write for?
I would say the most frequent lately are Power Rangers, Mission Impossible/Avengers, and a smattering of musicals. There's a bunch of others though.
Describe your writing area in detail?
Generally, I'm in our living room on the couch. Netflix tuned into whatever fandom I'm writing for at the moment, and our cat, Fish, is hovering over my shoulder on the back of the couch, watching the TV. (I've created a monster, she loves watching TV)
What do you love about writing your fanfic?
I love taking a character or an episode and expanding them, 'deleted' scenes that I wish would've made it in, more character moments, having two characters that should never meet, meet. It's fun to see how the interactions play out. Mostly I just love the escapism.
What sort of stories reach you the most and inspire you to write?
I love a good mystery with a bunch of red herrings and solid action and a solid ending. I love big, bold action pieces that play out like a movie when I read it.
Name five movies that you are sure fan fiction writers could have easily written a better script?
Oh, Lord. Okay. Twilight (and yes I'm fully aware of the irony of that), 50 Shades of Grey (also aware of the irony), the new Charlie's Angels (I loved it though, I really did), Street Fighter ("And who wants to go with ME?!" always makes me laugh, the dialogue was SO cheesy in that movie), and a few of the recent Star Wars movies, they just got a little convoluted and could've been a little more streamlined.
What's in your CD or MP3 player right now?
That would be my iPod Shuffle, and it's got everything from "La Habanera" to ZZ Top to Aaron Carter to Chris Young to the "Beetlejuice" OBC to Nickelback...I listen to just about anything.
Have you ever read a fanfic that made you truly laugh out loud?
“The Flambe Pizza Experiment” and “Hurricane Messer.” The first, Dom Hargan almost sets JKP on fire as RJ challenges him to get creative with a pizza, and in the second, Danny Messer’s in a crap mood because his daughter ate his cereal. I died laughing.
Blush?
Nothing really does. I blush at the thought of some of my first stories and how sketchy their plots are, does that count? If we're talking like smut-type stuff, nothing really makes me blush-if it's well-written, I even actually read it instead of skipping over it.
How long have you been a fan of the fandom you write in?
Since that primarily now is Rangers, I’d have to say right around Lightspeed Rescue in ’00 is when I discovered it, although I did grow up on the original…
Tell the readers something interesting about yourself no one would probably imagine?
I have a degree in public relations and a second in elementary ed and I have social anxiety. I know, weird, right?
What’s the longest story you've written so far and why did you take on something like it?
“Legendary Legacy” is both the longest and best received. I started it because rewatching Lightspeed Rescue one day, I noticed Sean Cw Johnson’s hair, and went, “He kind of reminds me of Troy…OH MY GOD.” Plus we didn’t get a whole lot of good character stuff and too much fighting, not enough Legendary Ranger cameos...so I thought I’d give it a rewrite.
Do you do research on things like locations, clothing, technology, etc for your stories? If so please list a couple of links that you use?
I do, actually. I'll Google map places (like finding an iHop in Baltimore) or period clothing (anything in my Mary Poppins series)...I really do mostly use Google, or Wikipedia.
What helps you get past writers block?
I don’t know if I have a hard and fast cure. Sometimes watching the source material helps. Other times, the urge to write will hit at the randomest time and then when I’m in front of my computer it just flows out.
What helps you set the mood to write?
The urge to write hits anywhere, I’ve dictated story plots to my phone note taking app before. So I don’t really have to be in any mood to write.
What sort of stories do you write?
A lot of ‘case’ stories and little action bits. I don’t really think I do romance or angst well.
Do you enjoy long stories or shorter ones? Why?
If it’s a long story, I like them better when they’re updated on a current basis, sometimes if they get too long it’s hard to remember where I was. Shorter ones are good if they have a point.
Who are your favorite characters to write for?
Um, I love Lindsay Monroe over in CSI:NY because she’s a Midwest girl like me, so writing her is like writing me. I also love my twin Brandt boys in my crossovers. So much sarcasm and so much headcanon to fill in! I'm also really enjoying Jack from Mary Poppins Returns, he's like a fun big brother. And his accent is a challenge.
What do you strive for with each of your stories?
Authenticity. Both in source material and how a character is portrayed. I'm all for characters being OOC if there's a point to be made with it, but I really like mine to stay true to character.
What do you feel are your current strengths and weaknesses as a writer?
Strengths…dialogue. Weaknesses…I’m getting better, but I want to be better at describing things, setting the scene. I also am noticing a lot of continuity problems in some of my stuff lately.
Why do you write?
Because it’s cheaper than therapy ;) No, I’m kidding, honestly, it’s just something I love to do.
Will you someday attempt to write something original and get published?
I’d love to. It’s just really hard for me to come up with original characters. Part of the reason I love fanfic so much is that the characters and the universe is already established, but I can just play in it and expand it.
How do you deal with being flamed? Has it ever happened?
I’ve never been full-on flamed. I’ve gotten dinged for details, but really minimal stuff, and most of the time that just makes me roll my eyes.
What drives you crazy when you read it in a fanfic?
Writers who don’t spellcheck. Or use proper punctuation. Or don’t have paragraph breaks. I literally can’t read it. I won’t even open it if there’s spelling errors in the summary. I’m a stickler for grammar.
Do you think you'll still be writing fanfic in 2 years? Five?
It’s been 14 years since I created my account. I’ll keep writing until I can’t use the keyboard anymore. I literally might be 50 years old writing Power Rangers fanfic and I'm already not sorry about it!
What's the craziest fanfic request you've ever received?
I don't get requests often. And truth be told when I do get them, I'm horrible at actually doing them, and I'm so sorry.
Do you save your favorite stories on your hard drive?
I sure do. I save everything, even the half-written stuff. I might get the urge to finish it someday, I have a couple great ideas for Criminal Minds if I could just find the time to write them.
In a crazy world if you had 200 million dollars and creative license to make a movie in the fandom you write in what would be the name of it, what would be the plot, who would star and how would it end?
Ohhh, it’d be in Avengers and it would be the Hawkeye/Black Widow movie. Because seriously, come on, how have we not gotten that whole story yet? Or it’d be a Lightspeed Rescue reunion.

My Personal Favorites I've Written:
1. "Loss For Words" (Hamilton): I'm normally not so good at angsty drama-ness, but I'm pretty proud of this threeshot.
2. "The Chimpanzoo" (Mary Poppins Returns): Blame Rob Marshall for this one. I'm normally not a fan of sequels but I LOVED Mary Poppins Returns and everyone's performances in it. Plus, I kind of like writing big brother Jack the Leerie.
3. "In a Heartbeat" (Power Rangers):The stray thought of "Troy from Megaforce looks like he could be Carter's kid" spawned this monster and its' sequel, "Legendary Legacy." Another NaNoWriMo submission that I didn't hit the word count on but wanted to see through to completion.
4. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" (CSI:NY): My first period piece set in the 1920s and I LOVE it.
5. "Legendary Legacy" (Power Rangers): A complete (like 95% complete) rewrite of Megaforce/Super Megaforce, with more ranger cameos, more character development and the continuation of "In a Heartbeat."
