It had been nagging at the back of his mind all day. Koizumi rested his bag on the leg of the steel chair and sat down at his desk. He wouldn't be satisfied until he had looked through the report again. He drew open a drawer in the desk, retrieving a clear, plastic folder and placing it on the desk before closing the drawer.

Koizumi flicked the lamp on, letting the cold blue light illuminate the cover of the folder. He smiled. They had not bothered with his real name The folder was simply marked: Kyon. He opened it.

The first few pages were occupied by information about Kyon's family and their home, with accompanying photographs of both. Koizumi paused to smile at a photo of Kyon chasing his sister. It was rare to see him exert himself in such a manner. He continued to parse through the pages until he came to the section that he was looking to find.

His eyes scanned the page, scouring it for anything unusual. He sighed. There was nothing out of the ordinary. Kyon's IQ score, his grades, everything, was normal. But still, something was just... off. He could feel it, lingering just outside his comprehension.

Suddenly it struck him. He bolted out of his chair, snatching his laptop from a nearby shelf. He waited as the loading screen came on, tapping his foot against the floor. He clicked swiftly on his browser and began typing furiously. Occasionally he glanced back at the folder, a bemused expression marking his features.

Slowly, he sat back down on the chair, placing the laptop beside the folder on his desk. He leaned back in the chair and stared at the ceiling, lost in thought.

"Kyon's IQ score is 100," whispered Koizumi. "Exactly average. His athletic skills are also precisely mediocre. Furthermore, his grades are average. So average, in fact, that they change each year to reflect that years average."

Koizumi whistled softly and looked down, his eyes resting on the folder. Kyon is normal, completely and utterly normal. There should be some deviation somewhere, but there wasn't.

Koizumi's gaze returned to the ceiling as he once more became lost in a realm of whirling thoughts.

I thought it was an interesting idea.
