Chapter 1: Prologue

When Mr. Dickinson asks Kai to take someone with him on a trip to a remote Japanese village to teach kids Beyblading, he's surprised that Kai almost instantly says, "Hillary."

Kai is surprised too. But in retrospect, it makes sense to have taken her name - or so he tells himself. Max is in America. Ray is in China. Tyson is too loud and obnoxious. Daichi is too young. Kenny is afraid of him.

But Hillary - she is not in America or China, she is not afraid of him, she is not a minor, and she knows when to shut up even though she, too, is loud and obnoxious.

He also happens to like her - but that's entirely irrelevant.

Hillary, too, is surprised when Kai asks her.

"Sure. But why not go alone?"

Kai shrugs, "I'll need your help with the training schedules. Mine are too…" Violent. Aggressive. Murderous. "...Advanced. For beginners."

She seems to believe him. He hands her a bus ticket for the day after, and she smiles teasingly at him as she fans herself with it.

"A month with an ice-berg. I'll have to pack all my winter wear."

He throws her a warning glare, but she's unfazed. He thinks there's a small challenge in her ruby eyes, as if she's daring him -to do what, he isn't sure. He ignores it, deciding to leave her games for their trip.

"I'll see you at the bus stop, Hillary."

It's two years after the B.E.G.A fiasco and Kai has graduated high school. He was set to start training to take over Hiwatari Corps, but finds himself working for the B.B.A as one of their head coaches instead.

A part of BBA's projects include sending coaches to train young bladers living in areas so remote that they only hear of beyblading on the T.V.

But this is the first time Mr. Dickinson has sent him outside of Bakuten.

Kai thinks the sudden trip has a lot to do with the fact that he had confided in Mr. Dickinson, the next father figure in his life, that he feels lost.

His father, Susumu Hiwatari, had left the family business - and Kai - to teach kids how to beyblade. Kai had spent a better part of his life chasing his grandfather's approval - and he finds that taking over Hiwatari Corps is another page of the same burnt book.

With no other option in sight, he takes Mr. Dickinson's offer. Kai thinks this is a test - Mr. Dickinson wants him to see what Susumu saw.

And to be honest, so does Kai.

AN:

I was writing a random scene about Hils sneaking into bed with Kai for an unrelated flashfiction, and got to thinking about the logistics - well, does she live in the same building, are they touring tf - and ended up writing a whole ass fic (like 10 chapters) instead with this plot. off of the logistics of their rooms.

so i guess i'm editing a fic and splitting the chapters up into digestable pieces - because the one shot would be too long.

leave a comment.
