Kills On The Radio
Chapter One: "Down In New Orleans"
January twenty-fourth, eighteen ninety six
New Orleans was a city bustling with jazz, energy and a uniqueness in comparison to other states in the U.S. The annual Mardi Gras festivals were complete with parades, good food and celebrations that lasted for several months of the year. The city lay near the Mississippi River. The French Quarter was the heart of New Orleans, known for Creole, Cajun and Spanish architecture and a unique blending of culture. Old fashioned cars with extra wheels on the sides were forms of transportation and newspapers were circulated widely. Other areas of New Orleans consisted of murky swamps, peaceful bayous, and densely wooded areas. At night, fireflies, alligators, deer and other wildlife would often come out in the safety of the dark.
Men and women would wear a variety of different clothing to suit their needs. Farmers would wear overalls, checkered shirts and straw hats. The women would go about their days in light-colored cotton dresses, leggings and shoes. Fancier folk would wear tall top hats, suits with bow ties, shiny black shoes, pants and the occasional a stylish cane. Upper class women would wear colorful dresses, high heels and round hats with flowers and sequins on top.
Sounds from jazz bands and lively music would fill the air, often in the mornings and evenings. Rhythm and blues, jazz, swing and a bunch of different genres would merge together and evolve into a new kind of music. At the tall white Imperial Theater building, performers would awe the audience with their dances, musicals and songs. It was the passion for the arts, music, food and life that brought a variety of people together in an otherwise segregated world.
And what a segregated world it was.
African Americans and Native Americans were treated as lower class and segregated from the dominant white-skinned folk every day. Signs labeling "white" and "colored" glared accusingly at people's faces in bold letters at every door, drinking fountain and entrance. The rich had it much easier than the poor, who roamed the streets and begged for food. With money, mansions and material goods, the butter and egg men brushed aside the sufferings of the poor, the different, the strange…anyone who didn't quite fit in. Men would often stay out late in bars, flirting with pretty dames or getting zozzled after drinking too much giggle juice.
Women worked in second class jobs that paid less than male-dominated jobs. They were the housewives, secretaries, teachers, cooks and maids, among others. The unfortunate ones were often prostitutes or homeless. Men were expected to provide for their families and demonstrate their strength and intelligence. Women were expected to care for their children and support the goals of their husbands. Only a handful of women were lucky enough to have equal standing with their partners, let alone have good husbands. Those who were homosexual or queer practically didn't exist at all in the mainstream public eye.
Alastor Moreau was born January twenty-fourth, eighteen ninety six at six AM. Alastor had medium brown skin, short brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. He wore glasses when he grew up. He would frequently wear pants and shirts with bow ties. In the sunlight, his hair would sometimes turn aburn red. Alastor would almost always be sprouting a wide smile, as Alastor's mother told him "You're never fully dressed without one." Alastor was the son of Armand and Antoinette Moreau.
Armand Moreau was a white French Christian and very conservative. He enjoyed hunting and taxidermy, skills that Alastor would learn and enjoy later on. His rifle and deer heads would be proudly displayed at their cabin in the woods. Armand loved his wife, but choosing to marry her made his parents disappointed. As time went on, he became more concerned with church, his previous status and pleasing his parents than taking care of his only son. Alastor would frequently be yelled at, and receive punches, bruises and hard kicks whenever he misbehaved. The worst moments were when, in a drunken haze, he molested his own child after sleeping with another white woman. Alastor's mother could only watch and listen in horror, before, she herself was thrown against the wall by her husband. Alastor's mother told him to smile as much as possible, as that was a sign of strength. One day, anxious to restore his previous status, he divorced her and never returned. Alastor was only nine.
Antoinette Moreau was a beautiful African American woman who was stern but had a very kind heart. Her father and Alastor's paternal grandparents had told her to abort him but she had refused, not tolerating any kind of racism. She had comforted Alastor after he was abused by his father and bullied by his fellow classmates. She worked hard to keep the house in good shape, washing clothes every Monday and making meals. Antoinette was the one who taught Alastor how to cook, sew, sing, and do Voodoo rituals. Alastor's favorite moments with her included when they danced to the gramophone in the living room, celebrating Mardi Gras, and when they made jambalaya for the first time. Making it almost killed her when she sprinkled gunpowder in it while drunk. She revered the Loa Yemaya and told Alastor voodoo, hoodoo and Native American myths. One myth she told him was about the Wendigo monster, who was associated with cannibalism and famine.
Alastor's mother died during the Nineteen Eighteen Spanish Flu, an event that left him heart broken and devastated. Alastor had to bury her at a cemetery on All Soul's Day. Alastor's maternal grandmother had died of old age.
As Alastor grew up, he grew to love music, singing, dancing, and all forms of entertainment. One of his hobbies that heavily influenced his life was radio broadcasting. He would sing and play music on the air, as well as tell jokes. He had gotten the job after singing and playing in a jazz band so well with the help of his uncle. He basked in fame and wealth during the Roaring Twenties as the most famous radio host in the state.
But the issues and trauma Alastor had faced before, plus the consistent racism would begin to transform him into a more sinister person. He pretended to be a charming gentlemen to women but never wanted to get intimate with anyone. He flirted just because he could. Alastor saw people as tools for his entertainment. He was a scoundrel, dishonest like Dr. Facilier. He became friends with famous flapper and performer Mimzy but Mimzy died during the roaring Twenties after accidentally drinking poisoned champagne that Alastor had made for a rival.
Alastor began his murdering spree in the nineteen twenties, killing racist men in various ways. Guns, knives, nooses, or just luring them into traps in the woods. After eating their remains, he would broadcast the murders, talking about them like he was announcing the weather. He became known as the Louisiana Lunatic, and wasn't found out or caught until his madness during the Great Depression. During the Depression, Alastor lost his mind after suffering from hunger and a gradual loss of listeners due to the prospects of television. This was when he hunted deer and humans and ate them like crazy, becoming careless in the process. He was eventually caught and he fled his house.
In the winter woods, Alastor was eventually shot in the head by a hunter and mauled to death by police dogs in nineteen thirty three. His radios were sent to a vintage shop and his belongings destroyed.
Once Alastor arrived in Hell, he was, at first defenseless. But after making a deal with Kalfu and the dark Loa, he was gifted with dark supernatural powers, allowing him to take down overlords and cause chaos. These powers included teleportation, tentacles, portal creation, shadow and object manipulation, blood magic, voodoo magic and many more. He could broadcast his murders anywhere with his microphone staff, Dave. Rumor has it that his radio voice in the staff was his radio human voice. The staff could both hypnotize listening demons (creating the red dial eyed grinning Tuned In hive-mind) and send out radio waves of destruction. He also had a shadow (Rotsala) to aid in his endeavors. Dr. Facilier (Alastor's distant cousin) became a snake demon, stripped of his power and worked under Alastor. Alastor befriended fellow Overlord Rosie, who became a mother like figure to him and singing/killing partner.
Alastor's goals remain uncertain: some say he genuinely wants to help Charlie redeem sinners to prove authority and fate wrong, others say he wants to overthrow Lucifer and take over Hell, Heaven and Earth. Others believe that he wants revenge on Vox, the angels, or his father…or that he and his shadow secretly work for Heaven/Adina. Others say he just wants to cause chaos for the sake of it. Whatever his motive, he'll make sure it's as entertaining for him as it is for the show.
Thanks to I.M.P. and a Satanic spell book, Alastor was able to briefly enter the human world. There he made deals with human Niffty and Husk among with many others at random. The two of them would eventually work for Alastor in Hell. The other unlucky humans would become Alastor's shadow and voodoo minions after death.
Niffty or Nerissa, was a Japanese American woman and maid. Cheerful and friendly, she loved working with her hands, dressing up in costumes and helping others. She also had a black pet poodle named Michelle. Her family moved from Japan to the U.S. but her family was taken to internment camps and died. Niffty became a maid to her white adoptive family. Alastor gave Niffty Japanese romance mangas, a radio and a boyfriend, only for Niffty to be abused by said boyfriend whom she had previously thought was perfect. Niffty had faced Asian discrimination as a maid. Allured by Alastor's cursed radio (the one with the smile on it), Niffty killed her boyfriend and burned down his house. Niffty was discovered by white police and she was stabbed several times before she was thrown into a burning fireplace in 1953. In Hell, Niffty wanted true love and a chance to clean and interact above the burning lake. Fan girl Niffty, obsessed with Alastor's charm, eagerly accepted his deal. Thus Alastor summoned her from the fireplace and she became the chef and housekeeper of Hazbin Hotel. She is useful to Alastor due to her speed, fire immunity and efficient cleaning.
Husk or Hilario was a white man with black hair who gambled and drank in both worlds. In his innocent youth, Husk loved singing, putting on magic shows and being around children. He also adored cats and kept several as pets. But living in Las Vegas got him into the lure of gambling and drinking in his teens, becoming a lifelong addiction. He participated in World War 2 and the Vietnam War. He became heartbroken when his former wife left him, his child leaving as well. Alastor gave Husk booze, money and a radio. Allured by Alastor's cursed radio (the one with the smile on it), Husk gambled his money away, drank a lot and got into brawls. Soon, Husk found himself in debt as an old man in the 1970s. He was also traumatized by the war. He drank himself to death in 1974 after nearly dying eight times. In Hell, Husk wanted money, booze and a chance to find love and friendship. Husk reluctantly accepted Alastor's deal, though he soon found out that it was a bad idea. Husk became the bartender at Hazbin Hotel. In contrast to his human name, Husk swore and was always grumpy. Husk is useful to Alastor due to his strength as his bodyguard, his way to win bets/deals and his ability to fly.
Alastor danced and sang with Charlie, along with fixing up the hotel, to her delight and Vaggie's suspicion. Alastor sees Charlie as cute and a good friend. Being ace, only a genuine emotional bond and friendship would allow the two to grow closer into romance. But what are the Radio Demon's true motives? Stay tuned.
