Hailey stirred awake, squinting her eyes as the bright morning sun penetrated her sleepy state. The first thing she realized was that she was not in her bed. The second, was that someone was lying next to her. Hailey lifted her head from the pillow, turning it to look at the body beside her. Jay. Shit. Her head plopped back onto the pillow, burying her face to block out the light as she racked her brain for memories from the previous night.
They left Molly's together, both clambering into Jay's truck as Hailey had drank more than her usual two drinks and she was definitely feeling it. She was also feeling rather giddy after spending the evening secretly flirting with Jay. The two had finally admitted their feelings for each other after she returned from New York two weeks ago. They had shared a kiss on that night and many more after that, however they had yet to consummate this 'new thing' between them with anything further. Hailey had spent the night teasing Jay; brushing a little closer than necessary when she moved around him, staring a little longer than normal when he sat across from her, and she couldn't deny that she may have pressed her butt backwards into him while he stood behind her when they paid the tab at the bar. Jay had done his fair share of teasing as well, his hand grazing her chest as he reached for a drink, biting his lower lip while he held her stare, and giving her hip a squeeze when she pressed in to him. By the time they made it to the truck, the tension was palpable between them. Hailey told Jay to take her to his place, stating that Vanessa would be home and she wasn't quiet ready to end the night yet. Jay had more than willingly agreed and that's exactly where the headed.
Hailey remembered their continued flirting on the drive to his place. She could recall the heated kiss they shared as the stumbled into his apartment. But the events that ended with her asleep in his bed, wearing nothing but one of his t-shirts...those details were a little blurry. If Hailey was a betting woman, she would wager that they had definitely had sex last night and if she was being honest, she was going to be pissed if she couldn't remember her first time with him. Hailey must have laid, lost in thought, longer than she thought because suddenly she could feel Jay moving beside her. She really debated just keeping her head buried in his pillow, not sure she was ready to face him just yet, but he saw through her fake asleep act and gently poked her shoulder.
"Morning." He smiled at her when she crooked her head to look at him.
"Morning." She returned, biting her lip sheepishly.
Jay held her gaze, holding his warm smile as his fingers came to gently push her hair out of her face. She could only imagine how much of a mess she looked like right now and was a little surprised he wasn't appalled by her morning hair. She decided it was going to be best to take the bull by the horns on this one, rather than remaining unsure and being stuck in an awkward limbo for who knows how long.
"Jay did we..." She trailed off, to chicken to finish the question. Instead, she trailed her eyes down her body before glancing at his, finally settling back on his face.
"Ummm..." Jay's face turned the slightest shade of pink as his eyes darted down his body before meeting hers. "I honestly...can't remember?" He ended in a question he knew she couldn't answer. But his reply earned a hearty laugh from her and he couldn't help but join in. "I mean, I know we kissed...a lot." Jay met her eyes again and this time his were dark.
"Yea." Hailey replied, biting her lip.
"And I know I definitely wanted too..." He trailed off, voice husky.
"Mhmm." Hailey hummed, nodding in agreement.
Hailey looked across Jay's bare chest, quickly deciding that if they hadn't...they should. She honestly didn't know why they were waiting, both of them were more than ready and a slow burn had been simmering between them for years. Hailey shifted her body closer to Jay's, reaching a hand up to pull him down into a kiss. What started slow quickly picked up pace when Jay rolled his body onto hers, causing Hailey to moan under his weight. Their lips battled for dominance while their hands roamed each others body, the heat growing rapidly between them. Hailey might not remember the night before, but she was a hundred percent sober right now and this moment was about to be engraved in her mind forever.
(Five Weeks Later)
Hailey sat at her desk, head in her hands as she couldn't shake the dizzy feeling that had been tormenting her all morning. Everything she did made her stomach swirl. Brewing some coffee? Bad idea. Reading an article on her phone? Negative. Riding the elevator on the way to visit a suspects apartment? Hard pass. The drive to and from the run down apartment building was torture and she was glad to be firmly settled back in her chair with no intention of leaving again any time soon. Jay had been shooting her concerned looks all morning but for the most part she had managed to blow them off. Now, as she sat slumped onto her desk, feeling the color drain from her face, she watched as he came up to kneel beside her.
"Are you okay?" He asked, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"M'mokay" She muttered against the crook of her arm. Was his cologne always that strong?
"You've seemed off all morning and you look awful." He told her, sounding worried.
"Gee, thanks." She deadpanned, trying to flash him a smile but falling flat.
"Maybe you should take the day off?" It didn't sound like the worst idea in the world, but Hailey wasn't a quitter. She was confident she could shake whatever this was off.
"I'm good Jay." Hailey picked her head up, ignoring the way the room lurched as she did so. She wanted to prove her point even further by going to get a snack from the break room, but thought maybe she shouldn't push it by standing just yet.
"Do you want some crackers? Water?" Jay could read her mind, she was sure of it.
Hailey nodded and watched as Jay quickly stood and walked towards the break room. She glanced around the rest of the room as the team was getting ready to go over a case they were working. Adam and Vanessa stood at the white board, Kim was shifting through some pictures of the crime scene, Kevin was at the printer waiting to grab something the techs had sent over, and Voight stood leaning against the doorway to his office, reading something on his phone. Jay returned with a bottle of water and a package of crackers, handing them to her before finding a seat on the corner of her desk, They frequently perched on the others desk so his proximity wouldn't draw any suspicion from the others. They were still in the process of figuring out how to be partners both in and out of work, so they had been keeping their relationship on the down low for the time being. Hailey tugged the tiny package of crackers open as the team gathered around to begin the run down. Popping one into her mouth, she tried to ignore the way her stomach turned when the food hit her tongue. Hailey chewed the cracker impossibly slow, almost afraid to swallow it, as she played with the cap of her water bottle. She tried to focus her attention on Vanessa and Adam who were going over the case and laying out what their next steps would be. Hailey was right, swallowing the cracker had been a bad idea. Her stomach churned in protest as she took a sip of the water, hoping to calm it down. Adam was explaining how they were going to set up surveillance in an attempt to gather some more information and even though she was trying hard to focus his words were going in and out.
"...So then maybe Halstead and Upton-" Adam's words were cut short as he glanced in her direction. "Hailey?" She watched as everyone's attention shifted to her. She knew she should try to get to the bathroom before the inevitable happened but she quickly realized she was already out of time.
"Sorry." She muttered. Reaching down, she hastily grabbed for her trash can, barely getting it under her before her stomach lurched and she was violently sick. Jay was beside her in an instant, his hands gently pulling her hair back. She could see Vanessa come to her other side, setting some tissues on the desk for when she was done. The room was silent when Hailey finally picked her head back up. She glanced around at the worried faces through tear filled eyes, quickly wiping her mouth with the tissues Vanessa had provided.
"I told you to go home." Jay shook his head in concern, his hand resting gently on her shoulder.
"I'm good." She stated, voice hoarse and throat burning. And she was. As quickly as it had come, the nausea was gone. The dizzy feeling had alleviated. And aside from the awful taste in her mouth and the major embarrassment from having gotten sick in front of everyone from her unit, she felt almost back to normal.
"Hailey.." Jay started to protest, silencing quickly when she raised her hand to stop him.
"I'm fine, must have been something I ate." Hailey gently brushed Jays hand off her shoulder before standing from her chair. "If you'll excuse me, I'd like to go brush my teeth." Hailey gave everyone a sheepish grin before ducking down the hall towards the locker room, face reddening from embarrassment.
When she returned to her desk, she found Jay sitting at his, staring at her through worry filled eyes. She noticed the rest of the team had dispersed to do whatever Adam had been telling them to do before she interrupted. Hailey sat down, taking a swig of her water before popping another cracker in her mouth, sending Jay a smile.
"I promise, I'm good." Hailey tried to assure him. "Now what's the plan?"
"We're supposed to go talk to a waitress at the diner in that neighborhood." Jay begrudgingly informed her, face still dripping with concern. "But I really think you should just go home."
"Jay I'm fine. Let's go." Hailey stood from her chair, grabbing her phone and radio from the desk and heading towards the door. Chuckling when she heard Jay protesting behind her.
