AN: This is a prequel to my other story, Legacies' Intervention. I've always wanted to do one of these, even if it is one of the most overused plots in the history of Fanfiction. Anyway, the way I have this plot planned out connects to my other story, but can be read all on its own.
Disclaimer: I don't think Rick Riordan is a single teenager surviving on Nutella, books, and day-long Netflix binging. That's who I am right now in quarantine. I don't think that Rick Riordan fits the description listed above, so he's not me and I'm not him. This means that I don't own any of the following, except for the OCs and the plot.
How to Get Away With Theft: Book 1
"It's going to be a great day," Charlie thought. See, that's where his problem started.
Oops. I'm being extremely rude. Hey there, readers! I'm the narrator, a sarcastic voice floating in the air watching the characters in the story. No, it's not stalking. It's not like I watch their every move. Like who would do that? (insert nervous laugh) ANYWAY, I'm just here for laughs and to inform readers like you. But we're getting off track.
Of course, being a twelve year old knowing nothing but fun times, you can't blame him for being oblivious. It kind of runs in the family. He didn't know anything of the impending doom that was in store for him in two years or the fact that bad luck is another thing that runs in the family.
Do you remember the words he thought at the top of the page? I should hope so. You didn't read it that long ago. Anyway, as the child of one of the unluckiest people to ever exist, by just thinking those words he invoked what is known as dramatic irony. Since you are probably asking what dramatic irony is, I'm going to give some examples. One is if you are watching Endgame for the fifth or sixth time, and you watch Black Widow say, "See you in a minute," but as someone who has already seen the movie, you know for a fact that this is not true, and she is the only one who doesn't come back. Another example of this is the second book/show in the Series of Unfortunate Events. For example, a fellow narrator of mine informs the reader of this very same piece of information by using the words of Uncle Monty (and later, his untimely death), and a poisoned piece of food.
This may seem like I'm getting off track again, but the reason for giving you all this information about dramatic irony is because it will prepare you for the rest of this story, and it will save me a whole bunch of explaining later. Unfortunately for you, I can't go into more detail about that because that would result in spoilers and my three week suspension. But never mind about that. Let's get back to Charlie!
Unlike lots of kids, Charlie got along great with his parents. He loved swimming with his dad, and reading with his mom. He knew that his parents and their friends were famous among demigods and his fellow legacies. He knew everything about them.
As the narrator, I can tell you that Charlie did NOT know his parents as well as he thought he did. In their defense, Percy and Annabeth Jackson had very good reasons to keep so many secrets.
They didn't have the best childhood. They dealt with abusive stepparents, saw war at 14 and 15, and fell into a place worse than hell at 16. It didn't help that once they had their first kid and were ready to give him the best life possible, they witnessed as a new Great Prophecy centered around him and his future siblings and cousins.
When Percy and Annabeth had brought home their last kids, they were visited by the Fates. During this visit, they were given a Celestial Bronze camera, a series of books, and an apology. Only one of those things are important to this story, and that would be the books.
On this particular day, Charlie could sense that something was off. His parents were skittish, always tense and alert. He brushed it off as another day being a seriously powerful legacy with seriously powerful parents. He knew something was seriously wrong the moment his parents sat him down in what his siblings had dubbed the Something Seriously Serious Sofa(or Ssss for short).
"Dad, I really didn't mean to eat the last cookies. And Mom, I'm sorry I borrowed your laptop without asking," Charlie quickly stated. "HA! I told you I didn't take it!" his father said, wagging his finger at his wife. "Percy, you know that this isn't the time for that.", his mother said then turned to face him. His dad's face quickly became solemn again. "Don't worry honey, you aren't in any trouble. We're just waiting for…."
"WE'RE HERE!" Charlie winced as he heard his family come through the door. He had the biggest family in the world, and they could be really loud sometimes. Though they weren't related by blood, he treated all his cousins and aunts and uncles like family. He looked around until he found the head of his sister. "Bee!" he whisper-yelled. She looked up at him, her eyebrows knitting together as she took in the sight of him sitting on the Ssss.
"Why are you sitting on the Ssss? What did you do this time?" she asked. "I didn't do anything. Apparently, we were waiting for the rest of the family." "Everybody settle down!" The adults tried to get all the kids to settle down, but it's hard when you have 20 mildly ADHD kids in one room. They kept on trying and failing, until a loud taxicab whistle cut through the noise.
Charlie looked up to see his father and Uncle Will giving their " be quiet now or your grounded" stare to all the children in the room. Now, it was so quiet that all the adults could hear the very audible gulps from the kids. The reason for this was because everybody knew that when your two most laid-back family members were serious, the situation at hand was not your average Minotaur fight. Even the babies of the family, four-year olds Aelia and Ethan, could feel the solemnness suffocate the room.
"Okay, now that we have everybody's attention, here is why we have called this emergency family meeting. In the upcoming future, you children will be faced with immense hardship. As your parents, we have tried everything to possibly avoid this. We had almost lost hope when four years ago, we were visited by the Fates. They told us that there may be one more way to avoid the danger."
His father got up and came back with a large brown box. " In this box is a series of books and some instructions. When you get to where you need to go, you'll know what to do."
As Charlie took the box from his dad, he realized the underlying implication of the words. "Wait. You aren't coming with us, are you?" His father gave a small smile and said, "You are your mother's son all right. Unfortunately, we adults cannot come with you. Something about the balance being upset and you 20 being too much already. Just take care of each other and watch each others' backs. We trust you, and remember that we love you."
All the parents gave similar farewells to their own children and as they were finishing up their goodbyes, a swirling white portal appeared at the front of the room. Charlie took a deep breath, picked up his youngest brother and sister, and with one final look at his parents' faces, walked through the glowing portal.
