Petunia opened her door and screamed as Vernon rushed out. She picked up the basket containing the baby and brought it inside placing it on the table. She was terrified. The baby was freezing cold and shivering. His blanket had obviously fallen off in the night. He was blue around his lips. They called an ambulance at once which came so fast to get the baby. In the commotion the letter had fallen on their kitchen floor unnoticed. "Mrs Dursley who is the baby? DO you know him?" the lady asked as they escorted him to the hospital Dudley in their arms.
"No I don't. He was on my doorstep this morning and I've never seen him before. Who could abandon their child like that and in the middle of the night as well? I mean we are lucky we were able to call you!" she said weeping into her tissue.
"Indeed you are lucky. Another hour and he would have died of frostbite. I can tell you we have been updating our systems all the time and we now have biometrics and can check who the baby really is. My guess would be a distressed single mother who couldn't cope and left her baby outside the best house she could see in your neighbourhood or something!" she replied as they pulled into the hospital. He was now crying heavily and screaming in what they assumed was pain. His little face was all screwed up almost like someone who had diarrhoea or constipation. He called out a loud no as his scar on his forehead burst open a black wailing spirit flying out of it and dying as he bled there. They had been getting out and as a consequence had only seen the end of Voldemort leaving him.
"What was that?" she asked as the paramedic looked at her in awe
"Probably a trick of the light ma'am. It's still very early and we're all still very tired plus we've been scared by all that happened to this poor little boy" she said as they wheeled him into hospital in the little medical crib. He was seen by the doctors who prescribed many IV antibiotics and gave him his baby shots in case he'd not had them. He was fed a warm bottle of milk and soon calmed down enough to be able to stop crying and sleep. He was then wheeled in for surgery as they needed to do some exploratory surgery of his forehead. Petunia and Vernon waited outside with baited breath. The piece of skin with the scar on it was cut off while some skin from his bottom was used to make a graft to cover his forehead. The skin with the scar on it was highly diseased and slowly rotting. His head had been fine though so they were relieved.
It had taken two hours for the surgery to be finished. When he was wheeled into the children's ward the biometric scans were done on him and when nothing was found they all frowned. He was quite obviously a lost cause.
"Mr and Mrs Dursley the biometric scans showed us he doesn't have any parents or they did not register him at the time of his birth. If we cannot find a good home for him he will have to go to the local orphanage!" they said seriously as Petunia and Vernon both shed tears at the life that poor boy would have if left in an orphanage. She looked at Vernon with teary eyes full of questions and looked relieved when he nodded.
"We would like to go the official route and adopt the boy seeing as relatives for him cannot be found. I would genuinely have nightmares were he left in an orphanage. Can you please arrange that?" she asked kindly as the nurse shed tears of her own.
"You two are so wonderful. I will call the regional lady from social services in to arrange the adoption. As he doesn't have a name we'll have to ask you to name him!" she said hading them the appropriate documentation. A while later after a lengthy conversation they had decided to call him Damian Harold Dursley after Petunia's father Harold and Vernons late father Damian. His father had been Damian Dudley Dursley which is where they had gotten the name Dudley for their son. They had always loved his middle name. Now both their parents were represented in this new boy and they smiled. He was obviously over a year old and they would have guessed he was two years old so they put that down on the file. He was actually one and a half but they didn't know that nor did they need to know it either. After a visit from Yvonne Quinn from social services to determine their circumstances it was decided to legally have them adopt this baby as their new son. He would be ready to leave hospital in one week by which time things would be ready for him at home.
"Vernon we have done the right thing but even you know we don't have enough room for him in the house what shall we do?" she asked him nervously. That was right but they did have a week to sort things out. Vernon left them at home and went to the bank to see about a loan and got the shock of his life when he went there.
"Mr Dursley it is good to see you today. I was going to call you because you have received an anonymous amount of money into your account today. We tried to trace it but couldn't. We have had our fraud squad check it out in case it was a scam alas it wasn't. People are getting scammed more these days so you never can be too sure!" he said as Vernon looked shocked to the core.
"How much was this amount?" he said thinking of the raise his job had said he'd be getting.
"Five hundred thousand pounds sir!" he responded as a stunned Vernon fainted and whacked his head as he went down. An ambulance was called as he was taken to casualty to get stitched up. He was all good in a half hour. He returned home to Petunia worrying about his head. Actually Dumbledore had placed that money into his account for Harry's care but not bothered to check how much it would be in pounds as he'd asked the goblins to transfer it and exchange it to pounds which they did without complaint for a fee.
"I'm ok Pet. I fainted at the bank and hit it. My pay rise came in and it would seem they decided to give it to me all in one go. We have enough to buy a new house and that is all I am ok with saying at the moment. I will put the house up for sale tomorrow Pet and we can try to be gone by the end of the week. We can buy a new home outright for first time ever and I plan to get one closer to work for me so I don't have to have a huge commute of one hour to work each day like I do now!" he said as he rang the local estate agent asking if someone from their office could come over with a brochure for them as they were looking to buy a new home and sell their current one. Very excited about the prospect of it someone was over within the hour to check out the house and hand over the brochure. They checked all around the house saying how immaculate it was they could guarantee that money would be made on it for sure. Their area was a sought after one so the consensus was that it would be easily sold within three or so months even earlier if the interest was that big. She left leaving her details of when she'd be back to take photos of it so it could be put on the market.
Petunia was shocked by the turn of events but delighted none the less. She would flourish somewhere else anyhow. The neighbours always looked down on them because they didn't always have enough money to have the latest things. The fact that they were now able to sell up was great. They both put Dudley down for his nap and perused the brochure finding a house they knew was perfect. They would put an offer on it tomorrow. It was in Brixton much closer to Vernons job in central London. The house was gorgeous and it was three stories. They eventually put in an offer on the home which was accepted three days later and they started to move in quickly. It was amazing what money could do. Another few thousand saw that packers had packed up the surrey home for them and delivered it to their new home in Brixton.
When you entered the home first you would see a small bathroom to the left of the door. Straight ahead was a large living room which covered most of that floor. In the hallway were two sets of stairs one leading up and one leading down. The stairs which went up lead to a large kitchen, bathroom, playroom and dinning room. The stairs which went down lead to the master bedroom with en suite and walk in wardrobe. On this floor also were two equally sized bedrooms with a Jack and Jill bathroom between them. From the living a back door lead out to a nicely sized garden full of flowers in bloom. It did look gorgeous. They went to visit Damian every day and each day he was happy to see them. He called them mama and dada too which made them both cry tears of joy. In the commotion at home with the movers the letter from Dumbledore had been hastily thrown into the bin as garbage no one would want anyway and was therefore forgotten unread. In a few days Damian was collected from the hospital still needing to take many meds at home but was at least out of the woods for now. They would make sure to keep his room very heated as per the suggestion of the hospital until he was better. The new happy family all settled into their new home.
In Hogwarts Dumbledore smiled to himself thinking all was going to plan. Harry was out of the way now somewhere he couldn't be disturbed and kept away from his fame. He would later be controlled when and as he was needed. The quill lifted itself on the registration book and crossed out the name of Harry Potter and wrote instead the names of Damian and Dudley Dursley. This would be interesting for sure.
