Hi All!
I hope that's you're all staying safe, healthy and sane during this time. I was searching through my written stories on my iPad and came across this one, that I started to write over a year ago (completely forgot that I never started to publish it, oops.) I thought I'd start publishing it now and I hope that it can bring you some joy during this time. (Although Joy might be the wrong word to say because this is more of a heartbreaking and angsty story.)
As a front line worker I am still working so I don't have as much time as I'd like to write, but based on what i had written, it's more then halfway done, so updates should be weekly. (Lets all hope I remember to update weekly.)
It's based off two shows that I love, Everwood and Jane the Virgin, and some of the story lines and scene ideas come from those shows. If you've watched either of threes shows then I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about. No copyright infringement intended.
Sending out love and happiness!
Title: Trapeze
Plot: Jo's world was turned upside down when her husband was involved in an accident which left him in a coma. So when her internship rolled round, there was only one reason why she hoped she would match at Grey Sloan- so that her husband could have access fo the best neurosurgeons in the country. (AU)
Chapter one
February 25th 2013
Summery: Josephine Wilson gets acquainted with her new reality
I once was sure of who'd I be.
I found myself, and watched her leave,
Maybe I'll become the things I don't believe,
Stupid girl, lost and naive, so pull yourself out of your dreams,
Life isn't a game,
It's hard reality
-Trapeze, Meg De Lacy
Dr Wilson smiles as she breaths in the crisp cold air as she steps out of her car. She looks into the back seat of her car and sees her children, 3 year old Theo and 3 month old Grace fast asleep. Jo had woken them up at 5am so that she could get them ready and be at the hospital by 6:30am for morning rounds.
She walks around to the back of the car and pulls out the double pram. It was heavy and wasn't the easiest thing to heave out of the boot, but it sure beat carrying two sleeping children.
Jo opens the car door and one at a time carefully places them into the pram. Theo sat in the seat at the front while Grace's baby capsule attached to the back. Although both children stirred during the transfer, both remained sleep.
Jo locks her car and walks through the freezing air to reach the main lobby entrance of the hospital. She pushes the pram to the forth floor daycare and once she drops them off she looks at the time, "damn, 6:20," Jo mumbles to herself. She was hoping to see him... her husband before rounds but unfortunately had no time.
She rushes down to the intern locker room and begins changing into her scrubs.
"Woah, woah, why the rush?" Steph questions as she, Leah and Heather watch Jo frantically change. They had been standing at the end of the locker isle and in her rush Jo hadn't noticed them.
The startling sound of Steph's voice causes Jo to jump, "Jesus, you scared me."
"We've been here the entire time. Just waiting for Dr Grey so we can round," Heather replies.
"Sorry, I'm rushing. Getting two kids ready at 5am in the morning is not an easy task," Jo sighs as she throws on her lab coat.
"Why doesn't your husband get them up and ready so you don't have to wake them up so early?" Leah questions.
"It's complicated," Jo responds.
"Seriously? How complicated could it be?" Leah accuses.
Jo takes a deep breath and fixes her hair, "A lot more complicated then you know."
"Interns, lets move!" Meredith calls out harshly as she stands by the door, "we don't have time for social conversations."
The interns scramble and follow Meredith down the halls and to room 47. They walk inside the room and stand at the end of the bed in which a woman with shoulder length brown hair laid with her bed reclined up.
"Who's presenting?" Meredith asks.
"Ah, I am," Heather replies, "Lauren Wheeler, 28. Was admitted yesterday after a blood clot to in her lung caused her to pass out. Was given one round of clot buster which broke the clot, allowing it pass. Has been under observation for 12 hours and all tests are normal."
"Excellent. What's the next step Brooks?" Meredith asks.
"We continue to monitor for a further 12 hours and do a repeat EKG and bloods and provided she returns no abnormal test results she will be discharged," Brooks explains.
"Let's move on," Meredith states.
They walk own the hall and Into the next room where they seen an elderly man laying in his bed, "Wilson, you're up," Meredith summons.
"Harrison Smith, 72. Day three post op from hip replacement. Dr Torres replaced the hip joint with an artificial joint. He has been up and walking and is doing well," Jo replies while reading the chart.
"And the next step is?" Meredith questions impatiently.
"Discharge and home recovery," Jo responds.
"Great. Thank you Mr Smith. Lets move on. We have one more case," Meredith orders.
The interns scramble and follow Meredith down the hall and over to the stair case, "Ah, where are we going? I thought we had another case," Leah asks as they walk up the stairs.
"We do. It just so happens to be in the neurosurgery wing," Meredith responds.
Jo feels her heart beginning to beat faster and faster, her palms begin to sweat as they round the corners of the neurosurgery wing, 'Please don't be Chris, please don't be Chris.' Jo thinks to herself. "Oh no," Jo mumbles quietly as they walk into Christopher's room.
'Quick, act normal. They don't need to know that he's your husband, not yet anyway. Just remain quiet and emotionless.' She tells herself.
"Who is presenting?" Meredith asks.
"I am," Leah responds.
"Christopher Wilson, age 28. Christopher is under the care of Dr Nelson and has been in a coma since a car accident last October. His vitals have remained stable and neurological work ups show no changes," Leah says.
"What's the course of treatment?" Meredith asks.
"We keep following the course of treatment prescribed by Dr Nelson. Neurological work ups daily to monitor his brain for any changes to his condition," Leah replies.
Jo Sighs quietly. He looked so lonely, but he also looked oddly peaceful. It was fine for him, but he wasn't the one left behind to deal with everything.
"Good," Meredith responds. "Edwards, Murphy, you're with Yang today. Wilson with Karev and Brooks with me."
Scene break
"Married Intern, come with me," Karev orders as he walks by Wilson, who was standing at the nurses station waiting for him.
"Married intern?" Jo questions curiously.
"Well, you're married and you're an intern. You don't see that very much," Alex states.
"Well, I am married," Jo confirms with a head nod.
"How long have you been married for?" Alex questions.
"It will be 9 years this year," she smiles.
"You must have been pretty young when you got married," Alex states as they continue walking down the hall.
"We were. We got married when I was 18. It was actually August 8th... for double infinity. It was the best day of my life," Jo reminisces.
"Aside from the day your kids were born, right?" Alex asks innocently.
"Who said I have kids?" Jo questions. "I've never talked about kids before. Have you heard me talk about kids?"
"Uh, maybe… I don't really know," he replies blankly. "Quite clearly, I don't pay that much attention to the things that you do or say," He adds.
"Yeah well, you're lucky we're friends," Jo chuckles.
"Friends?" Alex responds curiously.
"Well, I'd like to think so. We work closely together pretty much every day. You're a great surgeon and you're great with all the kids you work with. Sure, you can be an arse... you called me princess for the first two weeks I worked here... sometimes you still do and it annoys me… But you're a good guy," Jo responds, "and now you're probably going to let all of the go to your head."
Alex turns to Jo, "I'm sorry. Were you saying something?" He asks seriously.
"Wow, you really don't listen to me do you?" Jo chuckles.
"Haven't we discovered that yet?" He laughs.
"I'm doing a tumour resection at 3pm, so I need you to read up on William Smiths chart so you can assist, he is 13 years old. Aside from that I need you to just monitor my post ops and pre ops. There's not many, so it'll be a fairly light day. Page me if you need me," Alex inform her. Jo nods her head and Alex walks off. Jo picks up a tablet from the nurses station and logs into the hospital data base. She clicks on William's chart and notices that he was in the hospital for a tumour resection for stage 2 lymphoma. He was having a tumour resected from his lymph nod. Jo heads decided to head down to William's room to see how he was doing.
She knocks lightly on William's door and enters the room. She sees William on his bed. He was watching some TV.
"Hi William, my name is Dr Jo Wilson. You can call me Jo if you want? I'm going to be helping Dr Karev with your operation today," Jo says warmly, she walks over to him bed and sits down pat the bed of it. "I wanted to see how you were feeling."
"I'm scared. And my... my parents, they try not to be scared, but I can see that they're scared and sometimes they cry," William says.
"Hey, Hey," Jo says to Will as she notices tears beginning to well up in his eyes. She places her hand on his right shoulder and gives him a smile. "I know that it's scary, I do. Don't let this... the cancer be the only thing in your life. Don't let it consume you. It's okay to feel sick and miserable. But don't forget to live while you fight. If anything, that's the most important thing, because life doesn't stop when you have cancer."
William looks at Jo with a small smile, "Thank you." Jo looks at him with a smile. He was so young and has his entire life ahead of him. He shouldn't have to be fighting for his life, but here he was doing exactly that. And if Jo could make him feel even slightly better when talking him him, then she was happy.
"I'll be back at 2pm to get you ready for surgery, Okay?" Jo informs him. William nods his head and Jo stands up and leaves the room.
Scene break
In surgery
"Wilson, have you ever performed a tumour resection before?" Alex asks Jo as they stand in the OR. Each of them stood on either side of William, who was already under anaesthesia. Three scrub nurses were also in the room.
Jo shakes her head, "no, I haven't."
"I know that cases involving Cancer can be very emotional for most. It's a difficult thing to deal with, especially when it involves children. My first cancer case was a 7 year old with lymphatic cancer. She survived, thankfully, but it was still very hard for me to deal with," he tells her.
"Thank you," Jo replies.
"Alright, So William's last set of scans were taken yesterday and indicate the the tumour has good margins, so it should be easy to resect. After surgery William will have a few rounds of chemo," Alex informs her.
Jo nods her head, "he was so nervous before surgery. I checked on him a little while before I did his pre op and he was nervous. I spoke to him to calm his nerves, I hope that was okay?"
"Of course. That's the kind of thing that I want to see you do. In Paeds we go above and beyond because they're children. They need to know that you care," Alex replies.
The pair complete the tumour resection and then head up to brief his parents. The surgery had gone well and Jo William's parents were delighted by the news.
"You did very well in there... in the surgery. And the way you spoke to William's parents was excellent. You really made them feel safe and comfortable and a lot of interns and residents in Paeds done know how to do that when they start. They can talk to the children, but not always the parents," Alex praises as they walk away from William's parents.
"We do have kids, by the way," Jo speaks up.
"Pardon?" Alex questions.
"Earlier you assumed I had kids... and that in addition to my wedding day being the best day of my life, that their births would be too. Well, you were right," Jo responds
Alex stops walking ahead of Jo and turns to look at her, "How many kids do you have?"
"Ah, two. "Theo is 3 and Grace is 3 months," Jo responds with a large smile.
"Well, you look great for having a baby three months ago. Residency is demanding, especially in the intern year. I don't know how you're doing it with two young children, especially a baby," Alex responds.
"It's a long story," Jo responds.
"So tell me. I want to get to know you," Alex requests. "We could go get coffee?"
Jo shakes her head, "I don't really want to tell you. It's such a long and complicated story."
Alex nods his head, "Well, why don't you head off a little early and spend some time with them," he suggests.
Jo chuckles, "you know, when we first me I thought you were a little bit of a jerk, but beneath you are real sentimental."
"Whatever," Alex brushes aside.
"Who does not know how to take a compliment," she laughs with a shake of the head. Jo says goodbye to him and rather then heading to the daycare to pick up her kids, she heads to the Neuro ICU to see her husband.
"Hey Sarah, how's Chris doing?" Jo asks when she reaches the nurses station. As his Wife, Jo did not have access to his chart and always asked about his condition upon arrival.
"He's doing good. He misses you, his stats are always better after you visit," Sarah responds.
"I know. I've just been so slammed with combining work and then trying to juggle the kids that I just haven't had any time to see Chris. And that makes me a horrible person, I know," Jo sighs.
Sarah shakes her head, "No it doesn't. It makes you human."
Jo nods her head. She sanitises her hands before entering his room and pulls up a nearby chair to his bedside. "Today I helped Dr Karev... he's the attending I'm training under... I think I've mentioned him before. Anyway, I assisted on my first tumour resection. The patient, a little boy, he survived. I don't know what I would of done if he didn't, he's just a little boy... he's got his whole life ahead of him," Jo muses.
She picks up Chris' right hand and and kisses it. She holds it tightly, "I'm sorry I haven't been up to visit you as much. Things have been really crazy with the kids and work and I'm just struggling to balance it all. I... I don't know to how balance it all, especially without you. This job, it's demanding and Theo and Grace are doing such long days in daycare. I need you here with me, and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen. Both Dr Shepherds, they're in DC right now and after having a conversation with Dr Karev I know that they're supposed to back next week. I want one of them to consult on your case... they're the best... you deserve the best, and I'm going to get you the best."
Jo stands up and plants a kiss on her Husband's temple, "I love you," she says before leaving.
