A/N: More Icheb/Naomi fluff (I'm sorry, I still can't deal with Picard). Just a little something to answer the question of where the name 'Sabrina' comes from (highly recommend the movie I reference here - either version, but I personally prefer the 1954 movie). I made up the stuff about Ktarian pregnancies, mostly so that Naomi would be a little OOC in her response. I also borrowed some dialogue from the 1999 Mansfield Park movie. Anyways, hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Sabrina
Icheb listened to the rain outside, enjoying a moment of quiet contentment as he leaned against the headboard of the bed with Naomi nestled in his arms. Absently he ran a hand gently across her distended stomach, their second child – a daughter – was due soon and he was home on leave to be present for the birth.
He'd spent the morning adding the finishing touches to the nursery and, now, only one thing remained to be decided: their daughter needed a name.
"How would you feel about calling the baby 'Mezoti'?" Icheb asked, breaking the silence.
"Mezoti?" Naomi repeated, her tone carefully neutral.
"Yes," he confirmed, a little confused by her reaction, "you and Mezoti were quite close before she left Voyager."
"So were you, if I recall correctly," she countered, a touch of peevishness creeping into her tone.
Icheb suppressed a sigh. He should have remembered that Ktarian females often became paranoid and possessive of their mates during pregnancy; a nesting behaviour that ensured their spouse's continued protection for them and their children.
However, he knew from experience that it was not a good idea to counter her more ridiculous outbursts by explaining this biological aspect. No matter how irrational this instinct caused Naomi to behave.
Icheb kissed the top of her head, "She was like a little sister to me," he assured her.
"So was I," Naomi retorted.
"Hardly."
Naomi sat up slightly to look at him, "And what is that supposed to mean?"
"Naomi, my love, you have been many things to me, but a little sister is not one of them," he told her in his best placating tone.
She continued to eye him warily, "Not even on Voyager?"
He shook his head, "No, on Voyager you were my best friend."
"And after Voyager?" she prompted, relenting slightly.
"After Voyager it got much more complicated," he replied easily, "until I realised it was actually quite simple."
"Oh?"
He shrugged a shoulder, "I love you."
Naomi chewed her lip, "But what if-"
Icheb cut her off with a shake of his head, "You of all people should know that I don't indulge in idle speculation. I deal in facts," he explained patiently, "and the facts are quite simple. I love you – not as my best friend or as a little sister – but as a man loves a woman." He caught her eye, "As I have never loved anyone else."
Naomi made no response, but the look in her eyes was all the reply he needed.
"It seems that, after all these years, I've finally found a way to make you speechless," he commented, attempting to lighten the mood.
Naomi huffed in amusement as she settled back against him, "You're lucky I love you too," she muttered in mock offense.
"Yes I am," he agreed, pulling her closer and kissing her temple.
"I'm sorry my Ktarian instincts clouded the issue," Naomi said quietly after a long moment, "Mezoti is a lovely idea."
"But it still makes you uncomfortable," Icheb observed.
Naomi peeped up at him, "I'm sorry."
Icheb shrugged a shoulder, attempting nonchalance, "Don't be."
Naomi looked thoughtful, "Maybe we can use Mezoti as a middle name," she suggested finally. "She's your daughter too," she continued at his surprised look, "and Mezoti was important to you." She paused, "Besides, you're right, I was close to her on Voyager."
Icheb swallowed, surprised by how moved he was at Naomi's offer. Biological instinct or not, the fact that she was willing to put aside her misgivings and compromise touched him deeply. She truly was an exceptional woman.
"Did you have any thoughts on a first name?" he asked, after he'd found his voice again.
Naomi thought for a moment, "I've always liked the name 'Sabrina'."
Icheb looked thoughtful, "Isn't that the name of the lead character in one of those old movies Tom Paris enjoys?"
"Mm-hm, she's the title character in the film we watched on our first date," Naomi informed him.
Icheb frowned, "We went out for dinner on our first date."
Naomi looked up at him, "Don't you remember movie night?"
"On Voyager?" Icheb asked, still confused. "We were children," he reminded her as she nodded.
"That night made me feel very grown up," she told him, "and it was the first time that I wondered what it would be like," she added with a touch of wistfulness.
Icheb raised an eyebrow.
"If we really were on a date," she clarified.
For the second time that afternoon, Icheb found himself at a loss for words as he regarded his wife. "Sabrina Mezoti Wildman," he said finally, before smiling down at her, "I like it."
Naomi smiled and settled back in his arms, "Me too."
The decision made, they once again drifted into a comfortable silence that was only broken when Remi woke from his nap.
