You reach for the same bouquet in a flower shop.
"Sorry," they said at the same time. Jay wouldn't deny the feel of the fingertips of the blonde standing beside him. He would be lying if he said he hadn't noticed her when she walked in the shop, she looked less out of place than he currently felt.
"I'm sorry," she said, moving her hand away from the bouquet they had both reached for. "You were here first."
As she said that, he couldn't help but smile as he watched her cheeks pink up. She was clearly blushing, and she had noticed him in the shop as well.
"I'm sure your wife will love them," she continued.
"I'm single," was the first thing he told her. The choice of words shocked him, but he wouldn't complain. Just knowing that she now knew he was single made him have some kind of pride inside him.
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Single," she said, obviously flirting with him. The pink shade of her cheeks deepened and it was one of the cutest things he had ever seen.
"My name's Jay," he said, reaching out to shake her hand.
"Hailey," she replied. The hands stayed connected for longer than was socially acceptable, but he didn't want to be the one to pull away first.
"Maybe you can help me," he asked as she dropped his hand. "My sister-in-law just had a baby and the two women I work with told me to get her flowers."
"Congratulations," Hailey said. "Nothing for your brother?"
"Nah, no need to inflate his ego more. It's a boy and that makes his already big head even bigger."
Hailey laughed at that and all he could do was smile. He decided he liked making her laugh, even after meeting not even five minutes ago.
"You're in luck then," she told him. "My best friend from college just had a baby too, and I'm looking for something to get her as well."
At her statement, they just stared at each other, and Jay silently knew she was wondering the same thing.
"It was also a boy," she whispered as she looked up at him. "What hospital?"
"Chicago Med," he answered. "What's your friend's name?"
"Hannah," Hailey replied, her head tilting as she saw the recognition cross his face. "Are we getting flowers for the same person?"
Jay just chuckled, because of course the universe worked like this. Only he would have the luck to run into his sister-in-law's best friend at a flower shop, where the best friend happened to be buying flowers for the new baby.
"You're the college roommate," he said, a smirk forming on his face.
"And you're the cop brother," she replied.
He stuck out his hand again, feeling the need to properly introduce himself as she reciprocated.
"Jay Halstead, the brother."
"Hailey Upton, the best friend."
Hi friends! Something new I'm doing that I've been saving for a rainy day. I've been keeping a running list of different little prompts and ideas to write as I get into a rut and need a little kick in the booty, but I wanted to share with you! None of them will be related, so hopefully that will not cause confusion.
This will likely be the update for the week for the next few weeks (I promise I have enough) as I finish my last few classes of undergrad. BUT because they're so short, I'm gonna post them a few at a time! So, enjoy!
