This is actually my first fic after discovering fanfic a decade ago. I love this couple, but I can't help thinking that their *somewhat* romance in the manga and anime is quite sad. So, here's my short shot for this pair. Set in AU with some anime references. Please R&R! Thanks!

Megumi can't help but walk in the direction of the park. The park where it all started. She can't help the stirrings in her heart – a mixture of happiness, sadness, and yes, regret.

I'd like to say we gave it a try
I'd like to blame it all on life
Maybe we just weren't right
But that's a lie, that's a lie

Megumi reminisces going on "dates" which he fondly calls his games. She with her whiteboard and him with his smirk.

He'd go on teasing her because he likes to see her flustered. She can't help but be annoyed by his antics and puffs up her cheeks. Almost angry but never quite so when it comes to Yahiro.

And we can deny it as much as we want
But in time our feelings will show
'Cause sooner or later we'll wonder why we gave up
The truth is, everyone knows

"Hey, I'm bored." Yahiro looks across the table at Megumi. They're at their usual place in the café they frequent on their so-called dates.

\Do you want to go to the movies?/ Megumi wrote on her whiteboard.

"Nope."

\Do you want to go to the aquarium?/. Megumi tried again.

"I've been there a number of times. No." Yahiro replied.

\Do you want to go shopping?/ Megumi wrote.

"Really now, Megumi-chan. Can you not think of anything else to entertain your dearly beloved?" Yahiro replied while giving her a smirk.

Megumi can't help turning crimson and puffed her cheeks. She decided to stick her tongue out at Yahiro to which earned a small chuckle from the latter.

"Let's have a walk outside." Yahiro suddenly said after a few minutes of sitting and just staring out the café window.

\To where?/ Megumi asked while tilting her head.

"Anywhere."

\Ok. As long as it's with Yahiro-kun! ^_^ /

Yahiro almost blushed but deftly hid it by abruptly standing and exiting the café. Megumi followed Yahiro and the two fell in step while basking under the afternoon sun.

Almost, almost is never enough
So close to being in love
If I would have known that you wanted me the way I wanted you
Then maybe we wouldn't be two worlds apart
But right here in each other's arms
And we almost, we almost knew what love was
But almost is never enough

Megumi shivered. It's nearing winter and they had just decided to walk off the scrumptious meal they ate at the Italian restaurant for their so-called date. Yahiro noticed her shivering and offered her his outercoat. She adamantly refused by shaking her head no but Yahiro placed the outercoat atop her slender shoulders.

"Thank you." Megumi whispered while slightly blushing.

"Baka. Don't use your voice. Preserve it and use your whiteboard!" Yahiro chided but can't help the slight tinge on his cheeks.

The two resumed walking. Several people were doing their Christmas shopping and others were just enjoying their time off work or school since it's winter break, so they were lot of people in the pedestrians. Megumi and Yahiro walked side by side each other and there were several times that their fingers brushed each other's. Almost touching but not yet holding.

Suddenly, Megumi felt Yahiro's pinky curl around her pinky finger. She looked down at their intertwined fingers then up to Yahiro's head to which the latter was looking at the side as though something caught his eyes. In truth, he didn't want Megumi to see the vulnerability in his eyes. Megumi can't help but be elated by this small yet extremely sweet action, so she gave a tiny squeeze and slightly swung their intertwined fingers while walking. She tried to hide a tiny giggle that caused Yahiro to crinkle his eyes in happiness.

From afar, both looked contented and happy.

If I could change the world overnight
There'd be no such thing as goodbye
You'd be standing right where you were
And we'd get the chance we deserve,

It was an end of another "date". Yahiro opted to walk Megumi home instead of driving her home. Megumi was secretly happy over this because it meant a longer time to be with Yahiro.

\Yahiro-kun, did you have fun today?/ Megumi asked.

"Tch. Almost. You could do better, baka." The salmon-haired guy gently chided the brunette.

Megumi stuck out her tongue, but she knew Yahiro enjoyed their date since he was smiling.

As they rounded the corner two blocks away from the Yamamoto residence, they overheard a couple professing their love for each other.

"Thank you for being with me and making me the happiest and contented man alive. I love you," the man told the woman.

The voice of the man was somewhat familiar, to think that it resembles a voice of an S.A member. Their train of thought was cut off when they heard the woman speak.

"I would gladly spend the rest of my life with you. I love you…"

That voice. They both knew who it belongs to.

"…Tadashi-kun."

Then it clicked. Yahiro and Megumi unintentionally heard the marriage proposal of Tadashi and the acceptance of Akira.

The couple did not yet see the approaching figures of Yahiro and Megumi for they were on their own little world. So, both of them decided to silently turn around and use another direction towards the Yamamoto residence.

The walk was agonizingly silent. Yahiro had his hands inside his pockets and his head was bent, hair covering his eyes. Megumi was walking beside him, nervously chewing her lips and clutching her whiteboard to her chest.

When they were in front of the Yamamoto's gate, they just stood there in silence. Megumi chewed on her lower lip and wrote on her board.

\Yahiro-kun, are you ok?/

Yahiro lifted his eyes to read what Megumi wrote on her whiteboard. Then as a reply, he smiled and answered,

"Of course. Why wouldn't I be?"

He could almost convince her, but his smile did not reach his eyes. Almost but not enough.

Try to deny it as much as you want
But in time our feelings will show
'Cause sooner or later we'll wonder why we gave up
The truth is everyone knows

She tried calling him several times after what happened that night. Her texts were unanswered so she can't help but worry.

A day before their weekly so-called dates, Megumi received a text message.

Sender: S. Yahiro

Receiver: Y. Megumi

Won't have time tomorrow. Don't bother calling.

Two sentences. How could two *incomplete* sentences give such hurt. Megumi can't help the tears from falling but she decided she'll still prepare and be at the café tomorrow.

This occurred for more than two months. On the weekend, she'd get dressed and wait at the café for hours. No replies or callbacks from Yahiro. Jun and Ryuu were becoming concerned but Megumi assured them that everything fine, that she is fine.

This pattern continued until in the fourth month, Jun had enough. He decided that his twin should stop this self-destructive behavior and get a grip on reality. After having a heart-to-heart talk with his sister, she decided to at least try.

"I'm sorry for making you and Ryuu-nii worry, Jun-kun," Megumi said in between sobs.

Jun was cradling his crying sister and he gently hushed her. "Shh…stop crying. It's alright, Megu-chan. But please, stop this. You're just hurting yourself. It pains me to see you hurt."

"I'll try Jun-kun, I'll try." Megumi hiccupped in reply.

"We'll be here to help you, support you in this journey of healing." Jun comforted his twin while patting her head and soothing her back.

Yahiro had to admit it that what he did was such a douche move. 'Coward', he chided himself. True that hearing Akira accept Tadashi's marriage proposal was a shock, but it wasn't enough for him to be this despicable to Megumi.

It took him more than a month to process his thoughts. By the end of the second month, he was ready to admit that he is over Akira although he cannot yet say that he is happy with the engagement.

In the third month, he received an angry phone call from Sakura scolding him about how despicable he is by making Megumi wait for him in the café while he always stood her up. At first, he couldn't believe Sakura for why would Megumi wait in the café when he blatantly told her, through text, that he wouldn't come. But the next weekend, he parked his car near the café and saw Megumi waiting.

He couldn't muster the courage to walk in the café much less send her a text. She deserved more than that. She didn't deserve him, so he drove his car back to his office to immerse himself in paperwork.

Almost, almost is never enough (Is never enough, baby)
So close to being in love (So close)
If I would have known that you wanted me
The way I wanted you
Then maybe we wouldn't be two worlds apart

But almost is never enough

She received the invitation letter to Akira and Tadashi's wedding. It was more than a year ever since they overheard the proposal. Akira kindly requested Megumi to dedicate a song during the wedding reception. They still didn't know that Yahiro and Megumi overheard the proposal. None of the S.A. members knows.

Megumi accepted but she kind of feel constricted. So, she decided to walk outside. Her feet led her to the park. The park where it all started. The place where she decided that almost is never enough.

So how'd you find it? Haha I admit that the last sentence was kind of forced. But I hope it's ok. Needs improvement, I know. Care to R&R? Sequel or another songfic maybe?
