Before Tomorrow

Chapter One

Flora didn't want her father to leave. The war didn't need him on the front. Jack could be killed. Or worse, kidnapped. The family couldn't risk it. But that wasn't the only problem. With her only parent gone, Flora was left in her grandparent's crusty.

For weeks, Flora had begged Jack to let her stay with the Jacobs. Or even with the Morrises. That way she would be free. With life at her grandparents, they would train her to be a proper young lady. Like she was suppose to be. Flora would be put in a Finishing School or given a governess.

The next morning, Jack was to report to a military base. The small family was going to stay at the Pulitzers for the night. Flora was supposed to say goodbye. But she didn't want to say goodbye. She was ready to follow her father where ever he may go.

"You have to write to me every day, Papa," said Flora, "Even two times a day. I have to know about everything's that's goin' on."

"I will, Ace. I can promise you that," Jack replied, embracing his daughter.

The two held each other for a moment. This would be there last hug for the next few years. Or even their very last. But Flora had hope. It might be only a dying ember, but at least she had it. Nellie told her that once her father was sent off to fight, she wasn't sure that she would ever see her again.

"Goodbye, Papa," Flora whispered into his ear.

"I love you. Goodnight."

"'Night."

That was the last she saw of her father for many more years.
