Chapter 17: Ultor's Demise Part 3: ...And A Better Life.
I taped the box shut, my room now a bare husk of what used to be. Tomorrow was moving day, and I wasn't going to leave until Vogel was six feet under. I sat the box aside and went into the closet to start boxing up my hoodies. As I was boxing up more stuff I came across a hoodie that made my heart sink to my stomach. I pulled it off of the hanger, it was a purple zip up hoodie, much too large for me, but it wasn't mine to begin with. I remember that night we went to the movies, when Carlos and I went on our first date. That was the best night ever, I didn't want to put it in with my clothes, it was too special. I took another box and put the sweater inside of it, but I didn't stop there. Everything I got from Carlos I put in that box, there was the stuffed bear he got me from when I was in the hospital. There we just a bunch of different things, I threw in a coffee mug with a picture of us that he had personally made, and some pictures of us. It hurt deciding to finally let go of someone I loved so much, but I had to, for my sake. I was doing well until I grabbed something from under the bed, it was his purple beanie. It was still slightly torn in spots, and the note was still folded up inside. I clutched it, falling to knees, "Carlos..." Even when he was there with me, it was only because I wanted him to be there, no matter how bad I wanted him he wasn't coming back. I didn't want to put his stuff in the box, "You gotta do it." I told myself, "Just put it in there." I took a deep breath and put the last thing in the box. I wiped the tears from my face and taped up the last box. My phone dinged, taking me away from what I was doing which was probably for the best. I grabbed the phone off of the stack of boxes, it was a message for the news, and possible our chance to get rid of Vogel. I grabbed the one hoodie I left out and called Boss, "Boss, did you see the news?" I walked out the front door,
"Why would I watch the news?"
"Because, Vogel is scheduling a press release later today. This could be our chance to get him."
"When?"
"2 o'clock. I'm going to the hideout now."
"Okay, we'll think of something when you get here."
"Alright, later."
I walked down the stairs where Johnny, Boss, Shaundi, and Pierce were talking, "So what's the plan gonna be?" I asked,
"What do you know about the press conference?" Boss asked,
"Not much besides it's being held in front of the renovated church."
"Hmm." Boss gave it a thought,
"We aren't going to have a clear shot to Vogel, not after that thing with the execs." I said,
"So there's gonna be a lot of guards." Johnny said,
"Someone would have to take them out." Pierce added.
We all looked at Boss, "Alright, here's the plan. Shaundi, Perce, and Sara are gonna cover me on the ground. Johnny's gonna help from a good vantage point."
"There's a building across the street that can be a good place to set up." I said,
"Alright, let's go crash a press conference." We left the hideout.
Boss dropped Johnny off around the block from the building, we couldn't get any closer because the roadblocks, "Let's go." I said as I got out of the car.
We approached the news vans, "You in position Johnny?" Boss asked over the phone. There were vans everywhere, whatever Vogel had to say must have been pretty important, "Just make sure I get to Vogel."
Vogel started his speech, "As most of you know, the Ultor Board of Directors were assassinated the other night... and while we at Ultor would like to take the time to mourn their passing, sadly that's a luxury we don't have. The Corporate Office has named me Chairman, and I want to personally let you all know not only will business continue as usual..."
Boss and I ducked behind a news van, "Here, take this." He handed me a bandanna,
"What's this for?"
"You're protection, the last thing we need is for a bunch of cops and press to post your face all over the news."
"...Thanks." I tied it around my face and pulled up my hood, "This good?"
"Perfect, you cover me while I get to Vogel."
"Yes sir." Boss slid around the side of the van, I crept behind him. Boss was there, he could have taken his shot, but there was another gunshot,
"Johnny!" I turned and saw Johnny fighting with a cop, he shoved the guy off the rooftop and the guy landed with a splat. At that point the whole press conference turned into a shit show, guards started shooting at Boss so they could get Vogel out of there. I helped Boss take care of them but Vogel was already in the limo, Boss tried jumping on the limo but it was going to fast and he fell off, rolling on the pavement. I ran over to him, "Boss, you okay?"
"Im fine."
"We cant let Vogel get away." I said as I helped him up,
"We arent going to, come on." We got into a car, "Follow that limo." Boss said,
"Got it." I floored the gas pedal, nearly running over a pedestrian as we chased down Vogel. Boss leaned out the window and shot at him, a security car slammed into the back of us, almost causing a wipeout,
"Keep it straight Sara."
"I'm trying!" I said as I swerved to miss hitting a car head on. He shot out the tires of the car behind us before going back to the limo, the driver cut a corner in an attempt to escape us, "Hang on Boss!" I took a sharp right too,
"What the fuck Sara?"
"I fucking told you to hang on." The limo took another turn, "They're heading back to the Philips Building."
"He won't be able to hide in there." Vogel got out of the limo and ran into the building.
We pulled up and tried to go after Vogel but the building was locked down, "We aren't getting in there." I said, Boss' cell phone started to ring,
"You kill that asshole Vogel yet?" Johnny asked, apparently Boss put him on speaker for both of us to hear,
"Workin on it... He put the Philips Building on lockdown."
"There's security stations all over the outside of that thing. You take a helicopter and blow those things up you'll crash their security..."
I looked at Boss, "You got it." He hung up, "You could have said something about the security stations earlier."
"I would have, if I had known about them." I raised an eyebrow,
"Johnny knew something you didn't?"
"Don't get used to it, look, you go find that helicopter. Once the security is down I can get inside and help keep the Ultor guards off your ass."
"Alright, be careful Sara." We went our separate ways.
I watched as a helicopter took off, "Sara." Johnny approached me,
"Johnny, how did you know about the security posts on the building?"
"I did my research, you jealous I knew something you didn't?" He smirked,
"No, good job, but listen once Boss has that security system down I'm gonna go in and stop the guards from getting to him. I need you to hold back the cops out here, you can handle it right?"
"What? You questioning my murder skills?"
"No, that's why I asked for your help. If Shaundi and Pierce ever decide to show their asses they can help." We looked up and saw a helicopter going after Boss. The attack helicopter started to spin out of control and crashed down into the water, "Hopefully Boss can destroy them." I was interrupted by the sound of guards coming after us. Johnny and I fought the guards whilst dodging the debris from the fighting going on in the air, when I looked up I saw Boss jumping into the building. The helicopter he jumped out of started spinning down and blew up in the air,
"Look out!" Johnny pushed me out of the way before we were crushed by the wreckage,
"Holy shit." We looked at each other, "Now's my chance, I gotta go."
"Be careful." Johnny said as we got up,
"Don't worry about me, I'm your sister after all." I smirked before running into the building. The lobby was huge, there was a giant waterfall on the one wall, and a huge receptionist desk with no one sitting behind it. I readied my gun in case of an ambush, and was relatively pleased and slightly frightened that I was right. A flash grenade bounced in the middle of the floor, "Shit!" I don't behind one of the leather couches and covered my ears. The explosion was enough to almost knock the wind out of me, "Alright then, let's do this." I got out from behind the couch and shot at the guards.
The odds didn't look good, I was surrounded, but today I was gonna tip the scales in my favor. I grabbed the assault rifle off of one of the bodies and shot anyone in my way until there was nothing left but dead bodies and the irony scent of blood wafting in the air, "Gotta get to Boss." I hit the button to the elevator. The doors opened and I got in, just a straight shot up. I thought about it, "Wait." I hit the stop button just a few floors below the top, "They're gonna follow me up here..." I pried open the doors, "Alrighty now just gotta deter anymore problems." I shot out the control panel on the inside of the elevator, "Good luck getting anywhere now dickbags." I made my way to the stairwell.
Surely Boss was okay, "Boss can handle his own, I mean I did it right?" I asked myself. Up the second flight of stairs, "Stairs are good, good cardio, I should have just taken the stairs from the bottom up..." Then came the third flight, "Yup... Doing good... Doing A-okay..." And number four, "Why the fuck... Didn't I just stop the... Fucking elevator... At the damn top floor..." I opened the door to the hallway.
At the very end of the hall was a giant doorway, "That must be it." I ran down there and opened the door, a guard was standing in front of the door, shooting at Boss. I pulled out my gun and got him in the back of the head, "Boss?"
"Sara, over here." Boss was hiding behind a pillar,
"You okay?" He asked,
"You should see the other guys."
"I've almost got Vogel cornered, help keep the guards off of me."
"What do you think I've been doing? They shouldn't be coming up the elevator anymore, I disabled it."
"Good job Sara." We both came out from behind the pillar.
I grabbed the guard closest to us and used him as a human shield, "Go now Boss!" I yelled as I shot at another guard. The next few minutes was nothing but gunfire and screams of people getting injured, I watched as Boss and Vogel were in a gunfight, but Vogel was outmatched.
He fell to the ground as Boss shot him in the leg, "Alright, let's not be too hasty here... You're upset, you're frustrated... And you've got a gun. Which, ya know, I'd really like it if you put that away." Vogel begged as Boss and I approached him with our guns pointed at him,
"You should have thought of that before you sent a team to wipe out my gang." Boss said,
"I tried telling the board that going after the Saints was a big mistake."
"They should have listened to you."
"Believe me, right now I'm agreeing with you 100 percent..." He got up off his knees, we kept our guns on him, "But ya have to look at the positives, you're alive, they're dead, and you have the saints number one fan running Ult-" Vogel's sentence was cut short when Boss shot him in the face, causing him to fall out the window. Boss and I watched as he fell hundreds of feet, all the way down to the pavement below,
"Nice one..." I said as we watched a cop car pull up. Boss overlooked the city, it really was a nice view, I was going to miss it.
The sound of footsteps brought Boss and I out of our thoughts, he quick turned and pointed his gun at the source of the noise, which was Pierce and Shaundi, "We missed it?" Pierce asked,
"Told ya... now pay up." Shaundi held out her hand to him,
"Where the fuck were you guys?" Boss asked,
"Traffic..."
"What?"
"He's not joking, the roads've been blocked off." Shaundi said,
"And we had to take the stairs, the elevator was out."
I'll take the blame for that one." I said. Pierce and Shaundi gave me a look, "It's a long story..."
"You see Gat out there?"
"Oh he's fine. He's still out there killing cops."
Boss pulled out his phone, "Figures." He walked away from us, "... It's done, time to pull outta there." He said into the phone,
"...GET THE FUCK OFF ME!" I could hear Johnny yell into the phone, then he went inaudible again.
Boss turned to me, "I'm sure... Yeah, she's fine, she's with me." I rolled my eyes, of course he was worried about me, "... See ya back home." He hung up and dialed another number,
"Who ya callin now?" Pierce asked,
"Our ride."
We stepped out onto the helipad, it didn't take long for our ride to get there, we climbed into the helicopter and took off. Even through the rushing wind and the sound of the helicopter blades we still heard the sounds of cop cars and gunfire as we flew above the bridge, Johnny was still down there shooting at cops but he gave us a wave as we passed by. I rolled my eyes and looked up at the scenery, the sunset over the skyline of Stilwater was so picturesque, I couldn't take my eyes off it. I was gonna miss it all, but it was time for me to find a new home.
