Sleepwalking

He saw her passing by like a streak of crimson in the corner of his sight, her bare pale legs and colorful hair. She wore a piece of unbuttoned clothing, but he was too focused on the blueprints in front of him to pay her more attention.

Yet she kept circling him, and through the influx of information his mind received every second it was enough to distract him and make him lose track. He frowned. "Shut the door."

She didn't move, still standing by the entrance to the room he had made his office, and it made his nerves flicker with annoyance. She usually obeyed him, but now she made no attempt to do so. Harley-darley was in a mood to play, he figured, but he was in the mood to slam the door in her face.

As he got up and made an attempt to shove her out of his space, he noticed what she was wearing.

"Is that my shirt?" The corners of his mouth twitched. The crimson satin clung to her curves, open in the middle, but his attention was captured by her face. She bit her lip that was deliciously swollen. She smelled like his cologne and he almost cackled at this, astounded by the way she had pulled her hair back to resemble his. Her mascara was smudged around her eyes.

He couldn't capture her gaze; her acid blue eyes were far away, lost in nothingness, as if she had stumbled into his office without even knowing. It seemed as if she had not even heard him, and the annoyance defeated his amusement. He supposed that if he shoved her out of the room, she would probably topple over like a house of cards. Could be funny to watch, but not like this.

The Joker cupped her chin and peered into her eyes, interested to see if anyone was home at all. She still seemed gone, and when he finally caught her gaze through intense determination, a strange feeling shot through him.

A million thoughts collided at once, violently, had any of his goons seen her like this, had they? Did he have to slit some throats right now - not that he minded, he didn't mind a in fact, had Harley been outside like this? He looked her over for any signs of injury but found none. She wore nothing but a pair of panties and his shirt. If anyone had made her like this, there would be hell to pay.

Completely unaware of his fury of not being able to reach her, she turned around and almost sleep-walked out of the room. He caught her a moment later, swiftly lifting her into his arms and carrying to the nearest surface, which happened to be a sofa in the main room of the penthouse.

When he put her down in his usual manner, she seemed to stir a little. She looked up at him in wide-eyed confusion. The shirt had opened and completely slid off her chest, but he did not even notice, holding her gaze with a fiendish determination.

She smiled then, a wide expression that would have made any less fun-appreciative person uncomfortable, but the Joker knew that kind too well. One of her hands reached up and ran through his hair as he knelt by her side, angry and relieved at once, because he saw nothing funny about this and he hated being left outside the jokes.

Seeing that smile he knew she wouldn't come back for a while. But she was there, somewhere, lost in whatever maze the remains of the good ol' doctor Harleen had created for her, withdrawn into herself.

"I just wanna smile for a while," she mumbled, completely out of the blue, before she started giggling. She latched onto the front of his shirt with both hands, and leaned into him. With her face buried against his chest, her laughter turned into sobs and then back to laughter again. He put one arm around her waist, cradling her upper body against him. He felt his shirt getting soaked between her iron fists, before all strength left her and she went limp against him.

He ran a hand through her cologne-smelling hair, seeing it thick and greasy, and when she looked up and met his gaze, his Harley was there again. Eyes sparkling, a wicked smile, a flush of blood on her cheeks.

He kissed her then, completely indulged her, determined to make her forget whatever had been taking her smile away from him.
