Kagome judged him for a long moment, and Kouga was glad her weak ears couldn't pick out the pound of his heart. This was the instant their glimmer of friendship could end. He was telling the truth; he had been just as forthright when she'd confronted him two years prior.
He wondered if her mistrust would ever ease, if he had so deeply hurt her that she'd never be able to see how sorry he was. He would never have been so selfish if he'd known how much she would mean to him – how paramount her own happiness would become.
