Naruto opened his eyes and regretted it instantly. The blinding white of the room pierced his eyes as the white seemed to shine through his eyelids. Reluctantly, he opened his eyes slightly to get used to the light before opening them completely. Slowly getting up, which was hard considering how sore he was, and looked around the room. The room was empty of anyone and it seemed he was alone. He was never alone.
"Get up, lazy ass."
Naruto jumped out of his bed and snatched onto the ceiling and looked around wildly. A took a moment to identify the snickering at the back of his head to realize it was Kyūbi. Naruto huffed before landing back on the bed. 'Well, waking up in the hospital usually isn't an everyday thing.' Naruto thought dryly. Putting his feet on the cold ground, he found his clothes and shoes and swiftly put them on. Kyūbi spoke to him the entirety of the time.
"I took the liberty of searching through your mind for any signs of training and the like and only found dust and not a lick of brain cells." Kyūbi said. Naruto held back a comment and only grumbled about stupid foxes and their small brains as he jumped out the window and on a tree to the ground.
"At some point, we will need to train on how to use your elemental orbs and...spirit." He trailed off at the word spirit before collecting himself "We will also train in chakra control, strength, speed, stealth, a lot of intelligence, and how to capture other spirits." Kyūbi finished. Naruto stopped in his tracks in the alley last the last one.
'Capture Spirits?' He questioned.
"Nice to see you have an attention span of some sort, but yes. Capture Spirits" Kyūbi said. "Before your bloodline died out, there used to be more Shard Casters, a name for people with your bloodline, and therefore more spirits. But as the line died out, so did the number of used spirits. Spirits aren't like people when they die off instead they simply return to Nature or they lay in dormant in other people. At some point, you will be able to gain other people's spirit by making a bond with said person. If you, an actual shard caster, made a bond with someone with a dormant spirit. The spirit would know you are able to use them and transfer to you. This is very rare though, since it isn't easy to figure out who, or what, has a spirit."
Naruto stayed quiet as they reached his apartment in the shady part of Konoha. Quickly entering the shabby apartment and ignoring the graffiti in the room, he entered his room and laid upon his bed.
'So...i'll be able to gain more spirits if I find them?' He thought
"No, you'll probably have to go through tests and trials to be able to use some of them. And speaking of Spirits, you must learn about what attributes they use and what they can do for you in battle." Kyūbi said. "And...hold on…Come into the mindscape." Naruto's eyes widened before he felt himself being pulled and his vision blurred together into the sewage system.
He looked around and saw the familiar cage and headed toward it. The sight of the still-sleeping nine-tailed fox didn't curb his annoyance with him. "What do you want now?" Naruto questioned. Kyūbi gave no indication of him being noticed, but he did snort before answering.
"Summon your spirit." Kyūbi demanded. Naruto raised an eyebrow before complying. Putting his hand above the ring, he summoned the feeling of pulling the spirit out of his hand. He opened his eyes as he felt the orb go into his hands and smiled triumphantly as he successfully summoned it. The smile was quickly replaced with a look of confusion as the orb in his hand was different than the one from last night.
The ball had a wavy line in the middle and what seemed to be red frog eyes on the top and bottom. The aquamarine shade of the ball stood out against the red of the mindscape. Kyūbi seemed to growl at the spirit orb before shouting at Naruto.
"THROW IT, BOY!"
Naruto quickly threw the orb to the opposite side of the room and watched as the mindscape turned gray. Two golden rings spun around quickly around each other before a creature appeared in the middle of the sphere. The ground shook as the creature landed on the floor of the mindscape. It was a frog, er...a toad.
"Gennai!" The apparent male toad roared in the cage.
A golden frog with a silver stomach stood out in front of them with a Obi-ribbon tied around the middle. He had a pairs of holes running down its back with blades running down the middle of its face and back. His knees had spikes protruding from them and on his sides had two large spikes. The ribbon ends seemed to float around the toad with a green glow.
"Gennai!" His roar shook the mindscape and seemed to cause it to expand. The side which Gennai was on sparked bright green. His side seemed to change into a large pond of some kind. The blood on Kyūbi's side turned to clear water on Gennai's side. Lily pads float lazily around him as the silhouette of trees in the background.
"Guraaaaaaaaaaaaaah...It's been years so i've been able to move these old bones!" A elder man's voice rang around the mindscape, almost straining his ears. Kyūbi growled at the intruder before his tails launched from his cage and almost reach Gennai. The latter didn't move at all as something seemed to block Kyūbi's tails.
"Hmph! These youngin's never seemed to learn anything about manners!" Gennai reprimanded Kyūbi. Gennai looked down. His red eyes seemed to shine and twinkle as he looked down on Naruto.
"So you're the new Shard Caster? Hmmm...A bit of a runt, but I can tell you'll do great things." The large toad chuckled as Naruto grew indignant.
"Hey! It isn't my fault that I ain't the size of the Hokage Mountain doesn't mean anything!" Naruto yelled.
"And it isn't my fault that you are so close to the size of a pebble!" Gennai guffawed, slamming his hand onto the floor which caused the water ro splash on Naruto. After Gennai calmed down, he grew serious as he looked at Naruto.
"Okay youngin', shits happen since the last shard castor walked this planet. Nature is out of balance. The last shard castor was in charge of calming the spirits of the world, in hopes they wouldn't bring destruction to the planet. The spirits who were in charge of certain nature aren't here anymore and are replaced by new younger ones. And by that look of confusion, I assume that the other youngin' ain't tell you how the spirits just disappear?" Gennai said, giving a look to Kyūbi.
"Hmph, in any case. Spirits don't die, they return to nature. An example is a water spirit taking rest upon a lake, the water may become purer or the water may turn poisonous, the specific depends on the spirit. If I were ever to return to nature, I would have to return to the swamps and more frogs and toads will appear and the water would be purer. Spirits return to their original element. I'm pretty sure the furball of rude behind you told you about the five elements the spirits represent, so I don't have to tell you that. But as it goes, fire to fire or any heat source, water to any water source, earth to the earth, wind returns to the wind, and lightning goes back to lightning." Gennai finished this explanation with a huff since Kyūbi snorted.
"In any case, because of the new leaders of each element is now elected they may change the order of things. The new youngin's think they're high and mighty now since they are now in power. In any case, the decision whether or not to destroy the planet to start anew won't have for at least a few years. But what I wanted you to do is...I want you to gather back the old leaders and convince them to come back. If anyone has the power to make the spirits choose a decision is a shard castor, but to assure they stay in that decisions agreement a stronger and older spirit must remind them to do so." Gennai finished this with a hand slam to the floor. Naruto looked grimmed at the thought of he was tasked to do, and thought he wasn't really strong enough for that.
"Pish Posh!" Gennai roared as he seemed to read his thoughts. "Even from here, I can tell you're destined for great things! Not only do you have a spirit of a warrior, but the heart of pure love. Naruto-boy, if you really feel as though you're too weak for this, then I'll just have to train ya! Ain't that right, youngin'?" Gennai directed a look toward Kyūbi at this, to which he replied with a snort.
"Rude ball of fur, anyway. Don't worry Naruto! We'll train ya till your eyes can even kill a man!" Gennai roared as Naruto gained a sense of forboding.
'What have I done to myself…?' Naruto thought as Gennai and Kyūbi began to argue.
