Dear Delos,
I sure enjoyed this tale a lot. I had two very hard days at work, difficult education so it was most entertaining to read this in the evenings. :)
I had to go back and read your previous October tale. "Revenge" was very good, with research from the Babylonian POW that adds extra knowledge for us.
It merited a sequel and this is most interesting. Hephaestion and Mazaeus become good friends and Mazaeus' tale is deeply moving with the Gardener Ben-Hiram and their very strange kind of friendship. The beginning was most awkward but then it deepens into something truly giving. I could foresee the ending, but it was the better for it! :) Abdalonymus is one of my favorites also and this background for him is extensive and interesting.
Your two October tales are most refreshing, they give us avery good description of Hepahestion and the way he affects people around him. Also the tales are free from the very sad Ecbatana events.

What a great tribune.
1. You have me completely fooled. because the title is 'General, Satrap and king', I naturally thought the king refers to Alexander and therefore I wait for Alexander to jump into the story at any moment, even though I was confused that he had anything to do with a Persian Satrap before the east champion. It is not almost at the end of the story that I realized that you are talking about a different King. Great job!
2. I enjoy the subtle love-hatred relationship between Mazaeus and Abdalonymus. It reminded me of a famous movie during the WWII, a female Chinese spy was set to assassinate a a traitor who worked for the Japanese - instead she felt in love with him. Human nature is complex to say the least.
3. I am fascinated by the famous Alexander Sarcophagus for many reasons. It is the only artwork I can think where Alexander posed as a commanding character, but not the central one. He is overshadowed by the central figure, who is generally believed to be Hephaistion. What a great contribution to one of history's most underestimated heroes.

I really loved this sequel, so full of details an so well told; the little things, along the plot, are what make of a story so enjoyable.
even though Mazaeus might be sad for Abdalonymus's new position, he must have know that Hephaestion made the correct choice when he named king.
