i really enjoyed the way you described Phai's feelings and fears to Ptolemy; he was always so cautious and calm that it is strange to see him crumpling in front of his friend.

I love the way Hephaestion stood up and defy Craterous, even though the other General will give him fight any time he can.

You wrote a wonderful story. Poor Hephaistion (both in your story and historical one) - he had to go through a torment of unknown. He displayed an incredible fortitude and was richly rewarded by having his Alexander back alive. A few years later Alexander won't be so lucky, unfortunately.

Deeply moving Conclusion, with our Dear Ones in private. Hephestion's feelings are deep and sincere, it feels so very true when he at long last gives in to all his grief and worries. No wonder that he is crying when at last he is alone with his Dear One. Alexander is reassuring and confident - but no one can promise to always be there forever and always.
I like this happy ending. It leaves them together, free from serious worries. We all know what will come, but for now the Sun is shining once more.

Even if I know what will happen you had me deeply moved. The tension is unbearable at first. Even when they see the King's Ship they believe that it is his corpse coming. When Alexander lifts his arm to greet his Companions and soldiers the tension lifts. All are feeling joy and relief - but one more than all together.
"To Hephaestion, it felt like the world had been handed to him on a golden platter. There was nothing else he desired…his beloved had returned to him."
Now all will be well once more - but this tale reminds us of the Chaos that followed Alexander's True Death.

This is a very good angst tale. I feel so sorry for *our* Hephaestion, the way you allow us to share his worries, doubts and sorrow is deeply moving. You add details to the tale that makes it very realistic, especially the total disarray of Hephaestion's tent and person. It is so very out of character, it tells us much about the serious situation!
His ordering to kill the Mallians witout even interrogation is another indication of how worried and distraught he is.
Hephaestion has many enemies, Kraterus, Eumenes and Cassander the worst - but he also has friends. Ptolemy is a good one, of strong character and he offers stern and sincere support. Their time together is helpful for the worried Hephaestion. Perhaps it saves his mind. It is deeply moving when you let us *see* him on his own in his very deep worries and grief.
Now there is Hope again - but also more worries and disbelief.

Sorry, I took so lo g to get back to you. I love this! The last three chapters are really good, moremateralistic towards what things were really like. By that time In the campaign things were not all love and roses between all the characters. The army was very unhappy. I liked your version of Alexander's return much better than the vversion in the movie. Of course, i am glad to see Hephaisrion relieved of some of his burden. The last chapter was beautiful! I'm glad you decided to write this story. It' wonderful! LYSIS

Well done, it's the first time I ever read a story on the Mallian injury from Hephaestion's point of view. It is very close to Arrian's description (the trip on the river, the feelings of the generals and the soldiers, and so on) but you add the feelings of Hephaestion that Arrian completely omits. Most moving is the scene of Hephaestion finally in tears: 'He choked back a sob and buried his face in the crook of Alexander's neck.'
