. I needed some time to process, and some time to re-read this after the processing was over and I got incredibly distracted in real life.
Wow. Where to start.
The battle scenes leading to the end were fantastic .. you left doors and windows open just enough for trouble to seep through when the time is right, but I'll be honest. Even KNOWING Cap was gonna die, I didn't like that part. It irked me so. I knew it had to happen for the sake of the story and I KNEW you were doing it, too, but it didn't make it any easier. *grumbles to herself over Cap and Wiccan and Mac and Cassie*
The funeral scene you worked up here was fantastic ... a wonderful send off for our favorite soldier, and I truly enjoyed the bittersweet tone to it ... all the way up until you said Sharon was expecting. That particular scenario ... the whole woman left behind pregnant while her beloved dies is a trope that makes my skin crawl. To me, it's not heroic or some kind of tribute to him ... it's just ... gross. I've known women who have been in this situation (obviously without the super soldier serum and the whole hydra drama, but still) there is no way in this god-fearing earth that any woman in her position wouldn't be a freakin' puddle of a disaster in her shoes. The heartbreak alone would do it ... add to it the knowledge of what she's facing ALONE? Train. Wreck. I get that she's supposed to be stalwart and stoic, but ... come on. She just is coming off as cold to me. (and I have to say, please take this as what I'm sure is a difference of female/male outlook on this - but the idea that she just ... quit dealing with birth control as an intended SURPRISE to him is just ... well it made me lose a ton of respect for Sharon. That's something a teenager would do, not someone that's as responsible and pulled together as Sharon. And in the current climate of debates, it just illustrates how out of touch Cap was in keeping some responsibility in the sack, too. Which ... though I can see as soon as he FIRST came back being an issue? He's enough of a boyscout, I think, to pay attention and be more responsible than just leaving all of it to her. But I digress.)
All in all, still gonna read the next one ... just gotta get over there. *WOOSH*

'I guess I'm just too stupid to know when I'm beat.' Well dang. That's the most Steve Rogers line I've ever read in my life.
When I saw that this was the last chapter, I'm not gonna lie, I was super sad... and then I did a whole lot of rushing to catch up, because I had fallen behind in reading this fic. So please excuse me for only reviewing on this chapter; I was binge-reading this like a too-good Netflix show.
This fic has influenced the way I see not only Steve but also the Red Skull in a way that I can't describe. You capture that essence of their characters. You capture their -hearts- and that's what makes reading your stuff fun. The brilliant pacing and detail you pour in is the cherry on top.
I'm sad to see this fic end, but you do it with such grace, power, and heart that I'm left smiling and content. And that is a hard thing to do, my friend. To leave your readers feeling like the end is earned. That it's okay to say goodbye.
You are amazing.

So much building - congratulations, Skull - you've successfully launched WW3. I have faith in our good guys though.
Sad to see that the Hand managed to slip past Skull's men - but then again ... maybe the bitch will rise up and take him down after all.
Nice stuff. Looking forward to the big fight!

okay, first of all, WOW. There was so much going on here, it was a LOT to unpack, but the wheels are certainly turning and grinding toward a BIG big fight. I just ... did NOT see that coming at the end. NICE.
I applaud you sir. I love that last section best of all. To see the Skull with a broken HEART of all things. WOW. That was spectacular.
But man ... I am still a little shocked! Your fatalities (that I will not list here to encourage slackers to go READ the chapter) were HEARTBREAKING. You hit TWO that I love. TWO! Oh, man.
Again, I'm just WAITING to see where this goes. You STILL write the best Captain America.

alright. So I knew when I got this alert that I was going to have something GLORIOUS to read, and normally, I would have SAVED this for morning coffee but ...
I could not. WAIT so freakin' long for that!
And you did NOT disappoint! ((tackle hugs from the mitten))
it was SUCH a relief to see Cap back to full strength, but oh. my. God. I hate how it had to happen like THIS. It makes perfect sense, but still. I cannot stand Cap being used as a guinea pig. It grates me so. (so you did it right)
I ADORED the back and forth with Rumlow. You do Rage Cap SO WELL. He's just ... simmering and I am DYING to see how the big fight comes down -and I know it's gotta come down soon enough. Holy. Hell.
Of course, the peek at the Avengers was AMAZING and I love that Cap's back up is going to be raring to go. (THIS IS SO EXCITING.)
then you went and had the whole SHIELD on top of things too? Simply wonderful. OH MAN HAVE I MISSED THIS STORY.

You're back! I'm not caught up to this point yet and I really should reread the whole thing to get caught up because it's been so long... but I just wanted to say it made me grin to see you're back :)

How. The hell. Did I miss this update when it went up?
JD.
JD!
I swear to GOD you write the best Captain America. And the best Viper. And the best Red Skull. I ADORE this story and the work you've so CLEARLY put into it. (I've been thinking about this one a lot lately) So I am OH so glad to see something I didn't read before.
I'm honestly just waiting to see where this goes. It's amazing, and now I'm gonna go read that chess game again because I love it too.
*MUAH* Loving re-reading your work! Wish I could review the chapters twice!

Another short chapter that adds so much to your writing. You write love so well.
I know that sounds cliche, but I mean it. You write love the way it's supposed to work. Mutual respect, an honest wish for happiness for the other person. It's not just passion; it's honest, sincere thought. I love it.

That description of Jan as 'purple bruised' just... oh. My heart. What a way to talk about crying. I also love that she was so upset and rambling that she just talked right over him agreeing with her. Bless her soul. And I love the little details of her poking around Cap's room. The letters from Eisenhower and FDR were just such a good way to give that historical grounding to a fantastic character.
Also, I love that she made pancakes simply because that's all she knows how to make. That is so, so true-to-life.
Also, Hank made a funny and it's killing me because Hank doesn't do that. I love it. Not as hilarious as Steve calling him mother but still. *pats Hank on the head*
**is totally here for Cap, Hawkeye, and Jameson workouts. I need this stat. And also is he working out with Arnold Schwarzenegger? OF COURSE HE IS. I love this so much.
Also, this is a very sweet Sharon/Cap. You write them so wonderfully EQUAL, and I truly appreciate this. I like them on equal footing, and I like them relying on each other and acknowledging each other's strengths and weaknesses and basically what I'm saying is this is perfect.
My one complaint is that at times when you need to give a whole lot of information, it comes across as list-like (especially when giving backstory). It's a minor thing, though, and it doesn't effect my enjoyment of the beauty of the little details you pour into this thing that have me grinning MADLY the entire time.

Hi, J.D. here. I need to make a brief reply to my last reviewer. Since he-or-she logged in as a guest, I can't directly message them, so I have to do it here. I appreciate your compliments, and I'm so glad you are giving my story a read - but please know that these are indeed my words, 100%. I would never pass off someone else's work as my own. Sorry to get all weird about what was, essentially, an amazing compliment, but plagiarism is the literary equivalent of bubonic plague, so I wanted to be clear that this humongous pile of words is all mine. Thanks again, and I hope you keep reading!

(Hopefully these are posting, though since you pointed out the reviews are broken, I'm going to put these in a doc so I have them to post again if this website continues to do the very weird things it does)
Jackie is just so smart, and I love that about her. I love that she could tell Steve was hiding something from her, that she didn't believe his excuses, but most of all, I love the fact that it was Namor *crying* that clued her in the rest of the way. She's right, of course. He might be a passionate man, but crying has never been his style. But also, I am a big fan of Namor (when done right), so the fact that he was weeping for Steve just makes the whole thing even more emotionally gutting.
Again, your detail work blows me away, as a student of history and politics. I like that Steve noticed the way globalization has produced cities that are aesthetically familiar. What a way to show the passage of time for him.
The entire conversation with Union Jack was absolutely and positively lovely. I can't say enough good things about it, especially because I'm simply a sucker for stories where a good deed is passed on, especially in settings like comic book worlds where good deeds can be passed on through generations and can really settle on the shoulders of those who take up the mantle of old heroes. It's a story weakness of mine; I can't help but love it. :)
Also, the Red Skull's reaction to finding out the Cap is dying was nothing short of perfect and *exactly* what I expected (and wanted) out of that moment. The pure fury and the insane belief that only he could kill Steve... perfect.
I also love a well-written Viper. She's simply terrifying when she's done right, and she is that here, for sure. But I also love the terror that we as readers feel, terrified of the Red Skull, in her interactions with him. He's just so evil that even that venomous snake knows to be wary of him. Brilliant.

This is a different chapter than what we're used to seeing in fics like this, but I like it a lot. Especially because I'm a student of political science, and the minutia of things like the fact that their coder is an overworked operative is lovely. As was the FDR reference sneakily snuck in there. I'm a sucker for things like that.
And also I'm a sucker for phrases like 'I can offer no medical explanation,' which is fancy speak for WHAT IS HAPPENING. I love it.

'I can't be the man who let Captain America die.' Oh, Hank. Oh, honey. Oh. That just.. that just broke my heart. That's not nice at ALL. I had the same reaction as Jan. Just... come here let me hug you sweetie.
Also, I love Jan, and what you've got so far? Tells me she's in safe hands. She's nosy, she's stubborn, and she's chairwoman of the Avengers. Like she'd be in the dark for long at ALL. :)
Also can I say how much I adore the fact that Fury figured out Sharon got into his files because he is a paranoid little so and so? The bit where he checked the date the files were accessed spoke not only to Fury's paranoia but also to Sharon's resourcefulness, which made the whole thing beautiful. I also love the fact that Reed and Hank are not trying back alleys. Of course they're not. They're beautiful genius-level idiots, and I love them. (Also as a huge Bobbi Morse fan, I appreciated the Mockingbird callout.)
Also, I love Quartermain beyond words, but... Clay, honey, I'm not sure you can take down Sharon. A for enthusiasm and self-confidence though.
