Oh my word, such a sweet chapter! I kept smiling and laughing!
Harry's so cute when he's high. Just pure adorableness.
I feel like toast, too, actually. *pulls out hot buttered toast*
Mmmm. Want one?
It was great fun hearing everything from Harry's addled state, all those random leaps of logic, LOL (and seeing Severus going back and forth from exasperation to amusement). Some of his rambling made sense in its own way, though.
I agree that Severus hasn't had much opportunity to practice hugging. It's been a long, long time since he's had any sort of positive attention, much less someone to offer a positive touch. I think he can definitely learn, though, and he's well on his way!
Did you know there's actually a thing called Touch Deprivation, or Skin Hunger? I learned this recently. Apparently we're wired to need positive physical touch from other people, it produces all these happy hormones and stuff that we need. When someone goes too long without it or doesn't get enough, it can cause loneliness, depression, fear of any kind of intimacy, even aggression in some cases.
Kind of reminds me of a certain someone. ;)
I'm not much of a hugger myself, but the thing is, it depends. I don't like random people I don't know that well touching me, but if it's a family member or a good friend, I'll allow it. I don't initiate hugs, but I accept them from someone I'm close enough to. There has to be a certain amount of trust before I let you press your body against mine. Just saying. Makes me wonder if Severus is a similar case, at least in that he's not generally one to initiate touch and he doesn't trust anyone to get close enough to him anyway, and since no one's bothered until recently to even try, he's just gone without.
I bet Harry will be the only one allowed to hug him - the only one who wants to anyway, LOL.
More than hugging, Severus Snape is singing lullabies now?! Actual singing and using Harry's name and tucking him in and everything? Oh my heart! I'm jealous! I admit it. I wants.
So much for 'I'm not singing you to sleep, Potter.' Yeah. Softy.
He's what we call in my family French Bread: hard and crusty on the outside, soft and warm on the inside.
One of those deeply hidden qualities we suspected he had that he kept buried until now: his own gruff brand of being soothing and reassuring. Papa bear and his cub.
Song isn't even that unusual for him, when you consider that in HBP we learn about one of the spells he invented when he was younger, Vulnera Sanentur, described in the book as 'an incantation that sounded like a song.'
The defense rests. And eats another slice of toast.
Heck, it was all worth it just to see him blush. Too precious.
There's no going back now, he's officially a daddy, and that's just what Harry needs. Doesn't matter that you don't have biological kids, Severus, that's just deflecting and you know it.
He's staying by Harry's bedside, tending to him, sitting up with him, holding his hand, all the while his arm is throbbing with pain from the Dark Mark. Bless his heart. He's all in. When he says he won't leave, he means it. He doesn't even have to think about it anymore - there's no more hate for the Potter boy. No more lying on that front. Progress is being made!
I got the impression he wasn't only referring to Sirius when he said he would have stepped up and learned to see Harry as he is, not being able to help himself, leaving behind the ghosts of the past to live in the present. I liked that. Subtle, Severus, and very like you, too, but we know what you meant. ;)
And very Slytherin, asking Harry such a personal question (about hearing Lily when Dementors are near) while he's so loopy and unlikely to lie, resist, or remember. Probably kinder, too, because it isn't as painful this way, at least for Harry. Though now Severus has to deal with this new knowledge. You ask, you better be ready for the answer.
I could see Severus being in Ravenclaw, even Gryffindor to an extent, but I think he's in the right house. He has the cunning, the drive, the ambition, the willingness to cross lines and do whatever it takes to achieve goals. Dumbledore mentioned to him once in the books that he thought perhaps they sort students too soon, like he was insinuating that maybe Severus had been put in the wrong house, and even J.K. Rowling has said that one of the few mistakes the Sorting Hat has made was putting Severus in Slytherin. She's entitled to her opinion as the author, of course, but personally I feel that Slytherins tend to get a lot of undeserved flak just because some of them are bad apples. Slytherin qualities can be used for great good or great evil, depending on how you direct them; and those who do go the evil route need Slytherin qualities to get there, hence why they're all from that house. Every dark wizard may be Slytherin, but not all Slytherins are dark wizards - a distinction a lot of people still struggle with. Severus has every right to have house pride - in my biased opinion, he's a very fine Slytherin, one of the best, so why not own it? Rock it, dude!
Okay, fangirl rant over, LOL.
I bet when Harry was asking if Lily would have been alright with him being in Slytherin instead, or if Severus would have been alright with any kids of his own being in Gryffindor, he was really asking if Severus was okay with his 'new son' being a Gryffindor. Just a thought of mine. :)
Bless his heart, Harry is so selfless even when he's high, offering the bed even though he's the one in a worse state, and apologizing for his own lumpy bed he was thrown out of at Privet Drive while he only had the floor. (Good for you to apologize, Severus! You're growing up after all.) Yet still cheeky enough that he'll remind Severus of ALL the reasons he's such a bad teacher, LOL. He's a great teacher except he's so awful. Makes perfect sense! ;) Cracked me up.
(I do think Severus could be a great teacher, if he channeled his grouchy, exacting nature in a better way. My favorite teachers, no joke, were vinegary old women who were rough around the edges and yelled and swore when I messed up, but also pushed me to succeed because they knew I had potential and wanted to do the work. They didn't bother putting in as much effort for everyone because not everyone was willing to do the work, and we knew it. There was no belittling or abuse, just a persistent drive to keep improving. If I ever got upset it was at myself, feeling like I let them down when I messed up. Man, I miss those cranky old biddies. We had a lot of laughs too. Good times.
Once I had a substitute that was soft spoken and tactful in her critiques- I was so uncomfortable, LOL. I had trouble knowing exactly what I got wrong or how to fix it because she was so gentle and would mostly praise my effort instead of bluntly telling me outright what I needed to improve, and I didn't like not knowing for sure where I stood. Felt like I was on eggshells with the substitute for some reason, and couldn't wait for my sarcastic teacher to come back and bark at me again, LOL. Not everyone handles that teaching style well, though, so I imagine even if Severus stopped abusing students and used his intensity for good, being tough but fair, there would still be plenty of timid souls who would hate having him for a teacher. Once you earn his approval, though, more valuable for being hard earned, that's when you know you're good!)
Oh, but goodness, has it really sunk in for Harry that Severus isn't dead? He was too out of it at first to question why he was talking to Severus in the first place, and then had that panic attack when he briefly remembered, but is he really going to understand while he's currently drifting around in a cloudy haze? Is there going to be another meltdown when he's fully lucid and remembers Severus is supposed to be dead but wait he's right here?
And I'd forgotten - if Harry isn't officially taking Potions this year, Severus isn't one of his Professors anymore, really. That is sad. Surely there's a loophole somewhere, right? ;)
Can't wait to see how all this works out when they get back to Hogwarts, and how they recuperate. And oh, all the dirt they're going to have on each other! Just this chapter's loopiness is a lot of ammo, LOL, especially if Harry doesn't remember any of it, and a true Slytherin tucks that away for some fun later:
"Do you require some chocolate to get through your homework, Potter?"
"Why would you think I need chocolate?"
"No reason."
"Dreaming of a white Christmas this year, Potter?"
".. How did you know?"
"I'm psychic."
"I'm not taking you up on that offer you made me, Potter."
"What offer?"
"Don't worry about it."
"WHAT OFFER?"
And so on.
Shoot, I got bread crumbs everywhere. Sorry. *vanishes the crumbs* I'll try not to make a mess next time.

What a sweet and hilarious chapter! And hey, "You are the child; I am the adult." sounds like a prelude for Snape to take responsibility. I loved those little thrown-in references to past chapters, like Harry remembering Snape had said he wouldn't sing, the bed discussion or Snape asking Harry about the dementors (I was really touched by the way you wrote that last one). That passage about Sirius- it was so telling how Harry simply accepted that it would not have been himself that Sirius really wanted - just to get out of his home. It tells so much about his expectations about love and acceptance from other people. I am really curious how their relationship will unfold when they are back at Hogwarts, what with "I am no longer your professor", Snapes plan to distance himself and him denying (or does he?) Harry calling him by his first name. Harry is going to be miserable! I hope Snape will come to his senses show Harry he is worthy of love. I also wonder who the new DADA teacher is going to be (Remus? That would piss off Snape). Anyway, this was another chapter that I read over and over again. Thank you!

Sorry for the delay in reviewing, life has been crazy! I read the chapter as soon as it came out of course. I honestly didn't think I would love anything more than the Voldemort arc. But man. You gave me a whole other appreciation for this chapter here. It was all kinds of beautiful. Harry got exactly the patience and the comfort he needed as he "came down" from that potion. I'm sure some of it was guilt on Snape's part for having put him in that position in the first place- he made the goshdarn potion after all, a fact I'm sure he sorely regrets now- but also his growing feels of paternal care/protectiveness are really starting to shine through. He may think he can resist that... something tells me it will be a battle quickly lost ;) I'm excited too for Harry getting to see Hunter, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Remus again! I'm perhaps MOST excited for Ron's reaction. The guy has been out cold a long time... he's sure missed a lot. He was probably pretty frantic to hear Harry had been kidnapped. Perhaps knowing Snape saved him will help warm Ron to Snape... cause he's sure gonna be confused that Harry feels so fiercely attached to his potions professor now! So much fodder here and the story's almost done. Ack. I would be tickled pink if O Mine Enemy just like... never ended xD

my favorite yet omfg thank you thank you THANK YOU! i've probably read this like 50 times since last week! especially the scenes with snape comforting harry or harry just being a plain old confused goof ha i love that you can write these two in a scene like this and it feels so realistic that snape would be okay showing a little more of his soft gooey innards. i think my most fav scene was when harry has his nightmare about snape dying so snape hugs him, a little stiffly, but a REAL hug and he even lets harry fall asleep in his arms!? then when he lies harry back down harry is like don't go and snape promises not to and holds his hand ALL NIGHT omg GIRL that whole scene just GIVES ME LIFE

Jesus that was perfection. I frigging love when two characters go through trauma together and then there is a necessary healing in the aftermath. Snape is proving to be such a good and competent daddy figure. He would skin me alive for saying that LOL but I just tell it like I see it ;) The man may not have been a natural but given the time to grow he is proving just how much he has changed and come to care for Harry. "He would not be able to help himself" I see what you did there ;) You created such a sweet, kind, lovable Harry though, it's true! With just the right amount of sass and gumption! Ohh I can't wait to see him one day face off ol' Moldy Voldy for the last time! Please please don't leave us hanging too long on that! I'd love to see an active mentor Snape who maybe becomes guardian for the last summer too! Like he asks Harry if Harry would want that and of course the boy does by that point *happysighs* A girl can dream!

*wipes a tear* That was beautiful! The stuff of Snape/Harry crack. I loved every single moment. It was so incredibly touching to see Harry acting almost like a little kid and how very patient Snape could be with him. I am still pretty messed up from the hug, the humming, the hand holding... if he ever doubted he could do this, could be something more for Harry... Snape should look no further than this night! Agh. It just kills me that he still wants to pull away after all this. Please tell me it will be a temporary distancing that will be resolved before story's end!? Otherwise we will all HUNT YOU DOWN in search of that sequel LMAO! (With cookies and caramel for the persnickety old bat, of course) I'm looking forward to Hogwarts and all the reunions. These past few chapters at "Hotel Voldemort" have been the best fun but be interesting to see how both our boys deal with "normalcy" now. An experience like that is not something you can just brush aside! Can't wait to read the aftermath! Just curious, is Harry injured in any way still? He never mentioned any pains in this chapter but then again he was loopy, and maybe Snape already took care of that while he was asleep?

Dear Kirby Lane,
I'm as of now following this story! I also favourited, because even though it's not quite finished yet it definitely counts as some of my favourite fanfiction - and since I've been fervently reading HP fanfiction for the last 15 years or so that does mean something! I love how much depth you put into the characters, I was completely immersed and swept along troughout the entire story. I usually have some difficulty keeping tabs with stories of this length because I follow a number of them and tend to have to find the time to read at least parts of the story all over again (not that I always mind with a good story), but this is the first time I made the effort of making my own little 'recap' so I can get straight into it the next time you publish a chapter. Looking forward to it!
Lots of appreciation for such a captivating story, and the writer behind it!

I’ve been reading this story for YEARS and this was my favorite chapter yet! The snow, the chocolate, and the toast line all had me laughing out loud. But not only was it funny, it was so sweet and such a good development for their relationship. I can’t give this chapter (and the whole story) enough praise!

I honestly have no words for this, I just loved it that much! This is probably my most favorite chapter being the Snape/Harry fanatic that I am! It was a treasure trove of moments that will undoubtedly linger on in my memory for years to come. You slayed the sick!Harry comforting!Snape trope. I died laughing when Harry was so confused and babbling incoherently. But I also became a pile of mush when Snape was humming and hugging Harry... And we got that TWICE? In one chapter? Still in character? You are a blessing to us all, Kirby Lane!

I can't remember laughing so much during any other chapter of this story, like I laughed during the first half of this chapter! If I were to list everything I liked, I would have to copy-paste the most of the said half.
Harry's confused associations where adorable. "How do you feel?" "Toast." xD
And Snape still returning Harry's hands to where they belong… xD
I was laughing the hardest probably at "Geez, Snape was slow today."
There were also many sweet and touching moments. I felt like Christmas came again! Snape humming to Harry… Snape falling asleep letting Harry to hold his hand…
Thank you for Mrs. Thompson. The authors writing about Harry's muggle school always assume that it was all the hell - not only that he didn't have any friends (we know that from books), but that teachers were also against him, being manipulated by the Dursleys. Thank you for the kind Mrs. Thompson.
The special place in my heart belongs to Harry's attempt to smooth out Snape's frown line. My son, when he was few years old, reached up to my face and tried to smooth out my frown line. And it worked. I smiled :).
"He would not have been able to help himself."
- It seemed like Snape was talking more about himself than about Sirius.
And it seemed to me like he was fighting with himself. He was aware more than ever how special and extraordinary Harry was, but at the same time he was making efforts to emotionally come to terms with his rational decision to extricate himself from Harry's life.
The whole conversation about Sirius must have been very painful for him, not just because he hated Sirius, but because Harry opened the topic of his home. Snape was reminded that Harry was in need of a different home and for him it had to be a one more reason for distancing himself from Harry, to leave a room in Harry's life for somebody more suitable.
I guess back at school Snape will soon find out that the suitable caring professors won't grow on the trees. He will find out that Dumbledore still won't have enough time for Harry and that McGonagall's approach to her students, even the favourite ones, will always be impersonal. And that there will be just nobody else.
But Harry might have a hard time until Snape will realise it, being somewhat left alone with the demons of past events. I hope Ron and Hermione will be very supportive, but it won't have to be enough.
By the way, Snape thinks Harry won't remember the most of this night, but he will, I hope?

- This is good! Or HARRY makes some sort of joke about snow referencing this night, letting Snape know that, in spite of having been very confused, he REMEMBERS (and not just snow...) ;-)
I can't remember laughing so much during any other chapter of this story, like I laughed during the first half of this chapter! If I were to list everything I liked, I would have to copy-paste the most of the said half.
Harry's confused associations where adorable. "How do you feel?" "Toast." xD

This fic is honestly the best thing ever written. It’s something I always recommend to anyone, even if they don’t love Snape. I get so excited everytime I see you’ve updated in my inbox, your chapters make my day a little more brighter. This has got to be the best one yet though, the emotions were just so pure and I absolutely loved Harry’s foggy brain. Your writing is extremely magical in itself, I just love how it flows and how you craft the settings, characters and scenarios. Yo’ve made this world your own. Hope you’re staying safe and keeping well, can’t wait for the next update. ️

Oh, this was adorable, Harry so fuzzy in the head after the potion! All that talk about snow and chocolate and feelings...! Snape also handled everything so well, was so patient! (Didn't know he had it in him haha!)
Now I can't wait to see them back at Hogwarts - with a clear head for Harry - and their lovely new relationship still intact, I hope!

Jesus. Jesus, God, Mary, Joseph, and all the saints— I thought you were good at suspense before, but this?! This?! Snape jus... fuckin... wanders in and picks him up!? THAT’S THE MASTER PLAN?
Oh my God the BALLS of it all! It’s so insane that it works perfectly! As a reader I’m sitting here thinking it’s going to be this super epic, world breaking, fight to the death duel featuring Voldemort. Or maybe we’d get like this magic heist where there’s all these complicated wards and traps to get through. But generally the solution was so muggle, and I love that because Voldemort would’ve NEVER considered someone just regularly sneaking in. Most of that was just breaking and entering! Severus Snape did a freaking B&E on Voldemort and it worked. I am DYING.
And finally a Snape POV chapter! It was fantastic to get that insight into his feelings for Harry in the moment. Just how protective and determined he was, it was so beautiful. Oh, but then I was so sad when I realized he plans on pulling away from him! Poor Harry! Poor Snape! It’s so sad, but it’s such a Snape move isn’t it? When you’re right you’re right. He would do that! He is the king of drama after all, and Severitus as a genre really does thrive on angst, so I think it’s spot on. But God... poor thing... he really thinks Harry doesn’t love him at all.
I am going to enjoy Harry proving that wrong SO MUCH!
